About the Certified Nursing Assistant Course

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) students complete AH 280 Fundamentals of Nursing—Convalescent. The course provides a basic introduction to patient care in the convalescent setting and includes planning, safety, infection control, personal care, basic procedures, rehabilitation, nutrition, and clients’ rights and needs.

The course uses a hybrid format that combines online coursework with on-campus and clinical learning. Lecture work may include online assignments, quizzes, forums, and some proctored on-campus exams. Clinical and lab instruction includes on-campus skills practice and nursing facility experience.

What Students Learn

  • Basic nursing assistant care in the convalescent setting
  • Safety and infection control
  • Communication, teamwork, and professional conduct
  • Vital signs, personal care, and basic procedures
  • Residents’ rights, empathy, and compassionate care

Optional Home Health Aide Progression

AH 282 Home Health Care is designed to prepare students to provide basic health care in the home. Students interested in Home Health Aide preparation should ask the department about course availability and sequencing.

Important Expectations

Direct patient care is physically, mentally, and emotionally demanding. Students should be prepared for classroom, lab, and clinical responsibilities, including professional conduct, attendance, and safety expectations.

The CNA Certificate Program is accredited by the California Department of Public Health.
