Academic Standings
🌟 Your Success Matters—We’re Here to Help! 🌟
College can be challenging, and setbacks happen—but they don’t define you! If you’re struggling academically, there are resources, counselors, and strategies to help you get back on track. Understanding academic standing is the first step toward making a plan for success.
Academic Standards
Your academic standing is reviewed at the end of each term and is reflected on your transcript. Students receive a MyGav email notification about their academic standing after the grading period for Fall and Spring semesters. You can find more information about your particular standing on Gav Connect.
To stay in good standing, you must:
✔ Maintain a 2.0 GPA or higher each term and overall.
✔ Successfully complete at least 50% of the units you attempt.
If these standards aren’t met, you may be placed on academic or progress notice, which could lead to dismissal if not addressed.
Notice
Academic Notice |
Progress Notice |
You’ll be placed on academic notice if you have attempted 12 or more units, and your GPA falls below 2.0. |
You’ll be placed on progress notice if you receive W (Withdrawal), I (Incomplete), NP (No Pass), or NC (No Credit) for 50% or more of your enrolled units. |
There are two levels of notice:
Notice Level 1
A warning status that your academic performance needs improvement.
Notice Level 2
If your academic or progress standing does not improve in the next term, then you’ll be placed on Level 2 and be required to meet with a counselor to complete an improvement plan.
In other words: If you don’t earn C grades or better or withdraw from more than half of your classes, you may be placed on notice and need to take action to regain good standing.
Dismissal
If you're on academic or progress notice for three consecutive terms, you may be dismissed from the college.
What does dismissal mean?
- You won’t be able to register for classes on your own.
- To return, you must submit an Academic Recovery Reflection and work with a counselor to develop an Academic Recovery Plan to improve your academic standing.
Loss of Benefits
If you reach Notice Level 2 and/or Dismissal status, you could lose:
❌ Financial aid
❌ Tuition waivers
❌ Priority registration
To regain eligibility, you must return to good standing by improving your GPA and course completion rate.
