We're Hiring Tutors

Group of Peer Tutors at TrainingWe're hiring tutors for many subjects--English, math, biology, chemistry, economics, and more. You don't have to be a straight-A student to be a great tutor, but you should have a strong desire to help others learn while improving your own learning and study habits.

Peer tutors facilitate individual and small group tutoring sessions to promote independent learning and guide students to a more complete understanding of course work and effective study habits. Tutoring sessions may occur in the Learning Commons (LI 168), inside the classroom as part of our embedded tutoring program, or online.

Fall 2022 Tutoring Center and Writing Center Hiring Flyer

Available Peer Tutor Positions

Student workers are not to exceed 20 hours a week (across all campus employment).

Starting Pay: All peer tutors start at Step 2 (minimum wage + $1; currently, $16/hour). See “Base Compensation” in the Student Worker Handbook for details about pay rates and increases.

Note for Fall 2022 Applicants: All tutors hired for Fall 2022 semester must meet Gavilan's requirements for eligibility to work in-person. For details, view Board Policy 7330 Communicable Diseases.

Peer Tutor (Tutoring Center)

Under the direct supervision of the Faculty Coordinator, tutors in this position promote independent learning and guide students to a more complete understanding of course work. Tutors hold one-to-one sessions with students, often recurring weekly for the duration of the semester. Tutoring appointments may take place in-person or online.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Have completed any class you provide tutoring for with a "B" or higher grade.
  • Have completed or will complete GUID 28 (1.0 unit) before the second semester of work.
  • Be a current Gavilan College student registered in 6 or more units or the non-credit equivalent.
  • Be in good academic standing and meet satisfactory academic progress (SAP)
  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5.

Subjects We Need Tutors For:

  • Accounting
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Math
  • Statistics

Peer Tutor (Writing Center)

Under the direct supervision of the Faculty Coordinator, this position provides one-to-one consultation to assist and encourage student writers and the varied and multiple purposes and audiences their writing serves.

Tutors help writers identify and develop strategies and tools for their writing in and out of the classroom and throughout the writing and research processes. They also work with the Writing Center team to maintain a highly welcoming and supportive physical and online space.

Tutoring appointments may take place in-person or online.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Have passed English 1A with a "B" or higher.
  • Have completed or will complete GUID 28 (1.0 unit) before the second semester of work.
  • Enroll in English 12 (1.0 unit) during your first semester of work.
  • Be a current Gavilan College student registered in 6 or more units or the non-credit equivalent.
  • Be in good academic standing and meet satisfactory academic progress (SAP).
  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5.

Peer Tutor (Embedded Tutor)

Through embedded tutoring, the peer tutor acts as a guide, role model, and mentor for peers enrolled in classes in which the tutor has already demonstrated success. The embedded tutor is a bridge between the classroom and students, developing an independent sense of their own scholarly identity beyond it.

Inside the classroom, embedded tutors work closely with instructors to help develop a plan for embedded tutoring approaches within the classroom and participate in discussions and group activities. Outside of the classroom, they hold study sessions to reinforce concepts covered during class.

If you are interested in becoming an embedded tutor for a class you have taken, talk with the instructor to see if they are interested in having an embedded tutor--and let us know the class and instructor in your application.

Classes Eligible for Embedded Tutoring:

Embedded tutoring has been successful in challenging courses such as English 1A, history, psychology, math, and child development. If you have successfully completed a class that you think you could help other students navigate and pass, please let us know!
