Your Enrollment Steps Checklist
Gavilan College welcomes all students, regardless of immigration status. We're excited you're applying! Please follow the steps below to enroll in classes at Gavilan College! We’re here to help every step of the way!
Step One: Apply for Admission
Applying for admission at Gavilan College is a two-part process.
Note: A SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER IS NOT REQUIRED to apply to Gavilan College!
- First, need to create an account at CCCApply.
- You will need to use your phone number or personal email (not your school email) to verify your account and continue the process.
- You will be asked to complete the ID.me section to confirm your identity.
- You will receive an email confirming your profile was successfully completed.
- Second, complete an application for Gavilan College.
- Remember: CCCApply does not require a Social Security number.
- Select “other” for the citizenship question.
- Complete all remaining questions & submit your application.
- Once your Gavilan application has been submitted:
- Be sure to write down your 8-digit application confirmation number.
- Look for an email confirming receipt of the submitted application. Be sure to check your junk/spam folder. Processing time for your application may take 24 hours (excluding weekends and holidays).
- If you do not receive a follow-up email containing your Gavilan ID number (G00…), visit the Virtual Welcome Center to be connected with the Admissions & Records Office. Please have a photo ID available, including but not limited to a passport, school ID, matricula, etc.)
STEP TWO: Complete the AB 540 Tuition Exemption Form
- AB 540 allows eligible students, including undocumented students, to pay in-state tuition & and be considered for state-based financial aid through the California Dream Act. This is an important step! Eligibility is based on:
- Attendance requirements in California for high school, adult school, and community colleges (noncredit and credit courses) and;
- Additional degree options that extend beyond the high school diploma & GED. Get more specific details on the AB 540 Quick Guide.
- Complete an AB 540 Affidavit and be sure to sign it.
- You can submit the AB 540 Affidavit at the main campus, Building AD/Room 113, or email it to admissions@gavilan.edu, Admissions, or our UndocuLiaison Omar Macias at omacias@gavilan.edu.
- Be sure to include your unofficial transcripts and/or attendance records with the affidavit. This could include transcripts from high school or community college, and/or attendance records from an adult school/noncredit program.
- Students who don’t have all the AB 540 requirements yet should consider attending Noncredit Classes/Continuing Education Classes, which are free and open to the community. Meet with Blanca Melchor to identify what’s needed to complete AB 540 requirements. Call (408) 848-4859 for more information.
STEP THREE: Apply for Financial Aid
- All students who will be eligible for AB 540 are encouraged to apply for financial aid through the CADAA (California Dream Act Application).
- Information you submit on the CA Dream Act is not shared with the federal government.
- CSAC, which administers the California Dream Act, has committed to protecting all CADAA data to the fullest extent of the law.
- Completing the CADAA will allow you to determine your eligibility for state aid such as the California Promise Grant, Gavilan Promise Grant, Cal Grants, or other aid.

STEP FOUR: Math & English Placement
- Complete Student Self-Placement to assist in choosing your English and Math courses.
- For students who attended high school in the United States, placement is based on their GPA and coursework.
- If you don’t have a high school GPA, you can select “I don’t know my last grades.”
- If you have passed an Advanced Placement (AP) exam with a score of 3 or higher or attended other colleges, request that your official transcript be sent to admissions@gavilan.edu to ensure accurate placement. Meet with a Counselor to review the classes on your transcript.
STEP FIVE: Sign up for an Online Orientation
- Log into your MyGav portal.
- Under the Student tab, look for the Orientations and Workshops icon and complete Step 1- Orientation. It is available 24/7 and takes approximately one hour to complete.
- Complete the student survey at the end to receive credit for orientation.
- Completing the orientation allows you to get priority registration for next semester.
STEP SIX: Meet with a Counselor!
- Meet with a Counselor to select the classes for your first semester.
- Together you can:
- Review the Degrees/Certificates Offered at Gavilan College
- Log in to MyGav portal, under the student tab, go to myDegreeWorks and identify the courses required for your educational objective.
- You can review the worksheet to select General Education and Major courses for the upcoming term.
- Remember: students with a declared major and an education plan that outlines the courses necessary to complete their educational goal are more likely to graduate in a timely manner.
STEP SEVEN: Register Online for Courses & Pay Fees
- Register for classes by logging into your MyGav account. Under the student tab, go to Gavilan Self-Service Banner.
- Review the How to Register for Classes Video, if needed.
- To view your fees and pay, go to the Student Account tab in Self-Service Banner. For financial aid assistance, contact the Financial aid office.
- If you are taking online classes, you can access them in iLearn (Canvas).
- If you require further assistance, contact the Welcome Center.
STEP EIGHT: Complete an Education Plan (Ed Plan)
- An education plan is a comprehensive semester-by-semester plan of all the courses needed to complete your educational goal. Ed plans are created by Gavilan counselors.
- Once the semester begins, Schedule an Appointment with a Counselor to complete a comprehensive ed plan you can be eligible for priority registration next term.
- Completion of Orientation and Ed Plan = Priority Registration Next Semester.
STEP NINE: Consider Joining a Support Program
- We have a wide range of other programs to support our diverse student population. Students may qualify for one or more programs at Gavilan College. Each one is unique in its services, but similar in that your success is our main goal!
- Gavilan UndocuScholars provides many services for students who are undocumented to help them achieve their academic goals & more.
- Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) provides eligible students a range of services and benefits.

NOTE:
All Gavilan students are required to complete Title IX, sexual violence, and sexual harassment training within six months of the start of each school year.
Log into your MyGav portal. Under the Student tab, look for the Orientations and Workshops icon and complete Step 2 – Title IX Training.
