Academic Senate Appointments to Councils and Committees

College Council
The College Council serves as the primary governance body, making recommendations to the Superintendent/President on board policies, administrative procedures, and district goals, plans, and priorities. College Council acts as a two-way communication vehicle for recommendations and proposals that come through the participatory governance system and serves as a clearinghouse for information. The council oversees the District's committee structure and affinity groups. Its membership includes leaders from all governance groups (faculty represented by the Academic Senate, classified professionals represented by CSEA, students represented by ASGC, and management represented by the Management Council).
The Academic Senate President serves as the faculty representative on the College Council.
Recommending Committees
Recommending committees make recommendations to Gavilan's College Council on college governance matters. Recommending committees' membership have representation from all governance groups. Recommending committees' charges, membership, and meeting schedules are approved by the College Council.
Faculty are appointed by the Academic Senate President to serve on recommending committees--and faculty appointed are serving as representatives of the Academic Senate.Academic Staffing Committee*
The Academic Staffing Committee, representing the Academic Senate/faculty, serves as the primary recommending body to the Superintendent/President for the hiring priorities of all full-time academic faculty positions, including those defined as vacancies created by retirements, terminations, and resignations. The Superintendent/President makes the final decision. The Superintendent/President must report their final decisions for faculty hiring back to Academic Staffing committee and Academic Senate.

Institutional Planning Committee
Coordinates all District-wide planning initiatives, ensuring plans align with one another. Coordinates with committees with planning components. Ensures draft plans have been reviewed by appropriate constituent groups before going forward to College Council. Monitors plans, and reports out on progress towards goals to the college community.

PIPR-RAP
The Program Integrated Planning and Review, Resource Allocation Process Committee oversees the evaluation and planning of instructional and non-instructional programs to ensure alignment with institutional goals and resource availability. It facilitates data-informed decision-making by reviewing program effectiveness and linking planning efforts to budget and resource allocation processes.

Student Success & Equity
The Equity Committee works to promote equitable outcomes for all students by identifying and addressing systemic barriers to success. It supports campus-wide efforts to create an inclusive environment, reviews policies and practices through an equity lens, and recommends strategies to close equity gaps in access, achievement, and support.

Student Success & Equity Committee
Academic Senate Standing Committees
In accordance with Board Policy 2510, the Academic Senate's primary function is to make recommendations to the administration of the College and the Board of Trustees with respect to academic and professional matters (10+1). In order to fulfill this function, the Academic Senate has established the following Academic Senate Standing Committees. All authority and responsibilities of these Academic Senate Standing Committees shall be exercised through the Academic Senate Steering Committee. Faculty appointments to all Academic Senate Standing Committees must be approved by the Academic Senate by a simple majority vote.
Curriculum Committee
The Curriculum Committee reviews and approves proposals for new courses, programs, and revisions to existing curricula to ensure academic integrity, compliance with regulations, and alignment with institutional goals. It plays a central role in shaping the college’s educational offerings and maintaining high instructional standards.
The Curriculum Committee shall have jurisdiction over all phases in the development, modification, and updating of the curriculum at Gavilan College. The Committee shall have jurisdiction over the transfer General Education Patterns in compliance with CSU and UC mandates. The Committee shall also have jurisdiction over non-transfer General Education Patterns.

Faculty Professional Learning Committee
The Faculty Professional Learning Committee supports the continuous growth of faculty by planning, promoting, and assessing professional development opportunities. It identifies faculty learning needs, aligns activities with institutional goals, and fosters a culture of collaboration, innovation, and instructional excellence.

Faculty Professional Learning Committee
Academic Senate Steering Committee
The Academic Senate Steering Committee shall have general supervision of the affairs of the Academic Senate between its regular business meetings, determine the hour and place of Academic Senate meetings, make recommendations to the Academic Senate, and help set the agenda for Academic Senate meetings. The Academic Senate Steering Committee shall strive to meet once a month during the Fall and Spring semesters.

Academic Senate Executive Committee
The Academic Senate Executive Committee shall have general supervision of the affairs of the Academic Senate during times when the Academic Senate is on recess and take actions as outlined in Article X, Section 1.1 of these bylaws. The members of the Academic Senate Executive Committee are appointed by office:
- Academic Senate President
- Academic Senate Vice-President
- Academic Senate Secretary/Parliamentarian
- Equity Advocate
Academic Senate Consultation Committees
These committees have a consultative relationship with the Academic Senate, but their charges and membership are not governed by the Academic Senate. Their membership includes one or more faculty representatives appointed by the Academic Senate, and they consult with the Academic Senate on one or more matters that fall within the Academic Senate's sphere of responsibility (the 10+1). They are not subject to the Brown Act and, beyond their consultative relationship with the Academic Senate, operate as either Recommending Committees or Operational and Communication Committees.
Academic Staffing Committee
The Academic Staffing Committee, representing the Academic Senate/faculty, serves as the primary recommending body to the Superintendent/President for the hiring priorities of all full-time academic faculty positions, including those defined as vacancies created by retirements, terminations, and resignations. The Superintendent/President makes the final decision. The Superintendent/President must report their final decisions for faculty hiring back to Academic Staffing committee and Academic Senate.
Academic Staffing is a Recommending Committee (see above).

Distance Education Committee
The Distance Education Committee oversees the development, quality, and delivery of online and hybrid courses and programs. It establishes standards for course design, supports faculty training, ensures compliance with accreditation and accessibility requirements, and promotes best practices in distance learning to enhance student success.

Meaningful Assessment Committee
The Meaningful Assessment Committee supports the development and use of effective assessment practices to improve teaching, learning, and institutional effectiveness. It promotes a culture of inquiry by guiding the creation, implementation, and analysis of student learning outcomes and using the results to inform decision-making and continuous improvement.
