CARES Act Emergency Grants
The recently passed federal CARES Act includes funds for students to help with immediate needs related to the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis.
- Gavilan College has been allocated more than $2.2 million and has certified with the U.S. Department of Education that more than 50% of that allocation will go directly to students.
- The CARES Act Emergency Grant program has limited funding. Students will be awarded grants as long as funds remain available.
- Funds will be disbursed as quickly as possible in order to provide students with the support they need to continue their educational pursuits.
Based on guidelines established by the federal government for disbursement of CARES Act funds, students must meet basic eligibility criteria for federal financial aid (Title IV Eligibility). Students who are not Title IV-eligible are not eligible for CARES Act Emergency Grants. Students who have the greatest financial need will be allocated emergency grant funds first.
Student with a completed FAFSA and expected family contribution of $1000 or less who were enrolled in at least three face-to-face credit units in Spring 2020 will be automatically allocated an initial emergency grant of $700.
Additionally, any student who meet the CARES Act funding eligibility can apply for the Gavilan College CARES Act Emergency Grant. This request can be for an initial allocation is students are Title IV eligible, have submitted a FAFSA and have an expected family contribution of less than $15,000. Grant requests will be reviewed weekly.
Direct awards totaling over $550,000 have already been given to 832 Title IV-eligible students with an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of $1000 or less and who were enrolled in at least one on-ground class on March 13, 2020. Eligible students have received an email with information from the Financial Aid Office.
Remaining emergency funds will be available via an application process for Title IV-eligible students who were enrolled in at least one on-ground class on March 13, 2020. Eligible students will receive a message in their My Gavilan email account with details about the application process.
