Gavilan MESA CCCP Components
13 components.
One connected student experience.
The California Community Colleges MESA model is built around 13 program components that work together to support academic achievement, transfer preparation, professional growth, leadership, and a strong STEM community.
More than a single service.
MESA is not only tutoring, counseling, or a student center. The program is designed as a connected system of academic support, advising, community, professional development, outreach, leadership, and university and industry partnerships.
Some components are highly visible to students every week. Others happen behind the scenes to make sure the program has the staffing, partnerships, planning, and resources students need.
Building the environment for student success.
These components create the staffing, space, learning structure, and academic environment that make MESA work.
Administrative Component
MESA maintains dedicated program leadership, staffing, required student records, statewide participation, and the administrative structure needed to operate the program.
What this means for students: A dedicated team is responsible for coordinating MESA services, opportunities, reporting, and support.
Student Center
MESA provides dedicated space near STEM instruction for studying, tutoring, group work, meetings, resources, and student connection.
At Gavilan: The MESA Center in MA 115 serves as a place to study, connect, receive support, and participate in MESA activities.
Student Clustering
MESA encourages students to take mathematics, engineering, science, labs, workshops, and discussion groups together when possible.
Why it matters: Learning alongside other MESA students supports study groups, collaboration, critical thinking, confidence, and belonging.
Academic Excellence Workshops & Other High-Impact Practices
Academic Excellence Workshops bring small groups of students together to work collaboratively on difficult course material with a trained facilitator.
Why it matters: Students practice solving challenging problems together instead of working in isolation.
Helping students stay on track and move forward.
These components focus directly on academic planning, orientation, tutoring, transfer preparation, advising, and recruitment.
Academic Counseling
MESA students receive access to designated academic counseling that supports educational planning, progress monitoring, transfer preparation, course planning, and early intervention when challenges arise.
What students experience: A clearer academic path and regular opportunities to review progress toward transfer.
MESA Orientation
MESA provides orientation experiences that explain program purpose, benefits, expectations, student responsibilities, study skills, networking, professional growth, and transfer pathways.
What students experience: A structured introduction to the MESA community and how to use program resources effectively.
Student Support Services
MESA student support includes STEM tutoring, personal advising, university and financial-aid application assistance, leadership development, scholarship and internship information, study-group coordination, and family engagement.
What students experience: Support that extends beyond the classroom and addresses academic, transfer, career, and personal-success needs.
Student Outreach & Recruitment
MESA actively recruits eligible and historically underrepresented STEM students from Gavilan College and local high schools, including students who may benefit most from transfer-focused support.
Why it matters: Students learn about MESA early enough to build community and use the program throughout their STEM journey.
Connecting MESA beyond the classroom.
These components strengthen campus partnerships, student organizations, staff development, industry connections, and relationships with four-year institutions.
MESA Campus Council
MESA maintains a campus-wide council that reviews program outcomes, gathers feedback, supports planning, builds partnerships, and helps integrate MESA throughout the college.
Why it matters: MESA does not operate alone; campus departments and partners contribute to student success.
Professional Development
MESA supports professional development for program staff, faculty, facilitators, mentors, and student aides so those serving students understand the MESA model and effective support practices.
Why it matters: Students benefit from a team that continues developing its ability to support STEM success.
Student Organizations
MESA supports a student club or similar organization serving students in mathematics, engineering, and science, including opportunities connected with professional STEM organizations.
What students experience: Leadership, networking, peer community, conference participation, and professional identity development.
Local Business & Industry Council
MESA develops relationships with business and industry partners that can support internships, job shadowing, field trips, industry exposure, scholarships, equipment, and enrichment activities.
What students experience: Connections between classroom learning and real STEM careers.
Pro-Active Liaisons with MESA College Prep, MESA University & Similar Programs
MESA builds strong partnerships with four-year institutions and related MESA programs to create smoother transfer pathways and continued support toward STEM degree completion.
What students experience: Better connections to universities and a stronger bridge from Gavilan College to the next stage of their STEM education.
The 13 components become everyday opportunities.
Students do not need to memorize the component numbers. What matters is how the pieces come together in the MESA experience.
