Our Staff
Captain Darren Hall has devoted more than three decades to the fire service profession, combining extensive experience in emergency response, fire service leadership, and higher education. He recently retired as a Fire Captain with the City of Coronado Fire Department after a distinguished career that began as a Fire Explorer.
His career progressed through positions as a Reserve Firefighter, Seasonal Firefighter, and Firefighter Cadet before being appointed as a firefighter with the City of Coronado. Throughout his career, Captain Hall has remained committed to professional excellence by pursuing advanced education, specialized training, and community service while mentoring future fire service professionals.
Captain Hall holds a Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration from San Diego State University, an Associate of Science in Fire Science from San Diego Miramar College, and an Associate of Arts in Public Administration from Southwestern College. He is recognized as a Master Instructor by the California State Fire Marshal's Office and has extensive experience teaching and developing fire service curriculum for both academic institutions and California State Fire Training programs. His instructional experience includes preparing entry-level firefighter candidates through the Regional Occupational Program (ROP) and Southwestern College, as well as serving as the Fire Technology Program Director at San Diego Miramar College, where he oversees the development and implementation of Fire Technology curriculum designed to prepare students for careers in the fire and emergency services.
In recognition of his contributions to firefighter education and training, Captain Hall received the California State Fire Training Officer of the Year Award from the California State Firefighters' Association (CSFA) in 2011. Darren recently joined Gavilan College, where he is helping develop and build the college’s Fire Technology Program.
My teaching approach: My instructional philosophy emphasizes the integration of current fire service best practices, nationally recognized standards, and real-world operational experience to provide students with a strong foundation for successful careers in the fire and emergency services profession focused on maximizing higher education in the California Community College System for the Fire and Emergency Services community.
Outside the classroom: Outside the classroom, I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling in retirement, and supporting our daughter as she competes with the Mammoth Mountain Ski Team, often chasing storms whenever the schedule allows. When I'm home, you'll usually find me surfing or mountain biking. I also enjoy incorporating emerging technologies, innovative teaching strategies, and the latest California Community Colleges initiatives into our courses to create an engaging, real-world learning experience for our students.
