Discontinue Funding - Hispanic Serving Institution
Dear College Community,
I'm writing to you today to share that we've received official notification from the Department of Education regarding the future funding of some of our federal HSI grants. We understand that hearing about changes to something as vital as our Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) grants can be unsettling, and we want to assure you that your concerns are our concerns.
We anticipated this decision and have already taken steps to navigate it effectively. Our leadership and board are fully committed to ensuring our students continue to receive the support they need. We will use our budget reserves and other resources to minimize any impact on crucial student support services, programs and faculty/staff positions that these grants have funded.
Here is what we currently know. While the Department of Education has indicated it will discontinue funding for two of our three HSI grants, it appears that our STEM Title V grant remains unaffected. Also, one of the two HSI grants impacted was scheduled to end this year. The total projected budget impact to our district for the remaining grant over the next three years is $1.8 million. We are closely monitoring the possibility of legal action that may result in an injunction, which could delay this decision. As soon as we have any more information, we will be sure to let you know.
We recognize the impact this decision has on our ability to expand student resources and support, and we know this is difficult news to hear. Please know that our students and employees are our top priority. At Gavilan College, our commitment to the success of all our students is at the heart of everything we do. Through our Equity Framework, we will continue to ensure that those who need the most support receive it. We will get through this together.
Kind Regards,
Dr. Pedro Avila
