Our Commitment to Compensation Equity
Dear Campus Community,
I want to take a moment to sincerely express my deep appreciation for your dedication and the vital work you do every day. Your efforts make our college an exceptional place for learning and growth. We recognize the importance of your contributions and remain committed to ensuring that compensation reflects the true value of your work.
The college is moving forward with a Comprehensive Compensation and Classification Study to ensure our systems are fair, equitable, and reflective of the responsibilities across all employee groups. To support this work, we have partnered with Gallagher Benefit Services, Inc.
What the study will achieve: The compensation portion of the study will analyze salary structures for faculty (full-time and part-time), classified staff, and management positions. Its purpose is to identify and address salary gaps and internal equity issues across all employee groups. This work will provide the foundation for thoughtful, transparent discussions about compensation moving forward.
To accurately assess compensation, the college will first conduct a classification study, a review of job descriptions, duties, responsibilities, and minimum qualifications. Through questionnaires and interviews with employees, supervisors, and managers, we will ensure that job descriptions are up to date and that positions are correctly classified. The classification portion of the study will include classified, confidential, and management positions.
Preliminary Timeline:
- Phase 1 (Fall 2025): Data collection, including reviewing job descriptions and market comparisons.
- Phase 2 (Spring 2026): Continue data collection and analysis of data
- Phase 3 (Summer 2026): Development of preliminary recommendations.
- Phase 4 (Fall 2026): Presentation of final study findings to bargaining groups and Board of Trustees and commencement of implementation planning.
Through the recent Early Retirement Incentive Program (SERP), the district achieved $500,000 in savings. With support from our Board of Trustees, these funds are being reserved to help implement the recommendations that emerge from the study, pending appropriate consultation and negotiations. The funds will not be used to pay for the study itself.
In the coming weeks, Human Resources will host informational sessions for employees to learn more about the process and next steps. I encourage you to attend, ask questions, and stay engaged as this work progresses.
Your commitment to our students and our community is deeply valued. This study reflects an institutional commitment to clarity, equity, and shared understanding as we continue working together to strengthen Gavilan College.
Kind Regards,
Dr. Pedro Avila
