Si, Se Puede! Learning Center
Mission:
To offer youth, teens, families, and seniors the opportunity to empower themselves to learn, achieve, and grow. We are committed to providing quality programs that emphasize education, leadership and life skills throughout every Cesar Chavez Foundation (CCF) affordable housing property. Specifically, the Sí, Se Puede Learning Center at the Gilroy Apartments in Gilroy and Hollister seek to give K-5th grade students living on the CCF property the opportunity to empower themselves and achieve success in school, home, and their community.
Activities:
Sí, Se Puede Learning Center: The Cesar Chavez Foundation provides an after school program to youth in grades K-5th. Se Puede! Learning Center volunteers would need to devote a minimum of two hours per week to be the most effective.
Needs/Projects this year
- Homework Assistance: Monday-Thursday, the centers in both Gilroy and Hollister provide one hour of homework assistance to enrolled students who live on the affordable housing property. The majority of our students are or were English Language Learners who are in current need of language arts and math grade improvement. Volunteers would assist the fifteen K-5th grade students to better understand their homework assignments, complete all assignments correctly, and ultimately advance grade levels.
- Learning Activities: These additional activities may focus on homework,, literacy, and Self-Organized Learning Environment curriculum. We will be promoting a healthy lifestyle for the students as well as getting them in touch with their artistic side.
GILROY: The Sí, Se Puede! Learning Center after school program operates year round. During the school year it is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 2:45-5:15 PM, Wednesday from 2:00-4:30 PM. Students enrolled in the after school program participate in activities that include: homework assistance, literacy, life skills, character building, social development, health and nutrition. Friday we will be focusing on fitness and art and special arts projects.
HOLLISTER: Sí, Se Puede Learning Center: The Cesar Chavez Foundation provides an after school program to youth in grades K-5th. The Sí, Se Puede! Learning Center after school program operates year round. During the school year it is open Monday, Tuesday, Weds. and Friday from 3-5:30 p.m., Thursday from 2:00-4:30 PM. Students enrolled in the after school program participate in activities that include: homework assistance, literacy, life skills, character building, social development, health and nutrition. Friday we will be focusing on health, nutrition, fitness and special arts projects. Only seven Gavilan students total will be accepted at this site, so prompt application is important.
Who should apply:
Students who can commit to at least 2 hours per week of work. Students who are ready to be energetically involved with and committed to our student population and their advancement. Students with strong communication and leadership skills. Students who are over 18 must pass a background check conducted by the agency. Minor misdemeanors may not be a barrier to work at this agency, but any violent or sexual offense will not be allowed. Spanish speakers welcome.
Students over 18 will have to pass a TB test (meaning it has to be negative), to ensure our students are in a healthy environment. TB tests should be done at at a reputable clinic or doctors office (see list) and students who complete their hours with the program will be reimbursed upon presentation of their receipts.
Students under 18 do not need background check or a TB test.
Who should not apply:
Students who cannot pass a background check cannot be placed at this site. Students who are not comfortable working with youth. Students who wear revealing clothes or clothing that could be mistaken for gang attire.
Special Notes:
Mandatory orientations; please plan to attend one or the other: Monday February 27th at Hollister address, 5:45-6:30 p.m., and Tuesday Feb. 28th at Gilroy address below, 5:45 to 6:30 p.m.
Employees at this non-profit learning center are very busy providing valuable services. Please respect their time by making appointments, coming on time, and calling ahead if you have an emergency that prevents you from coming on time.
