Gilroy Demonstration Garden
Mission:
The mission of the Gilroy Demonstration Garden is to enrich our local community through environmentally sustainable gardening and education programs that empower residents to experience the Earth as a classroom, an edible landscape, the center of our community, and a place of enjoyment, beauty, and endless wonder.
Activities:
Our three-quarter acre "edible classroom" located in the heart of downtown Gilroy serves the greater South County area. We provide produce for a Farmers Market booth, and sponsor the Farmers Market April-October. We establish partnerships with various schools and other groups to provide educational visits and support. We work with Valle Verde to promote food self sufficiency among low income families. A large Farm to Table fundraiser is held each October to fund irrigation for the gardenng year. A new program will involve local restuarants ordering produce they can use. The garden wishes to do more educational work with local kids, including a summer camp.
Needs this semester:
Students are needed to help with basic gardening tasks: watering, weeding, hauling, planting, harvesting on
A variety of garden projects and research depending on student abilities are needed, especially including outreach to low income and/or Spanish-speaking famlies. Students may also develop relationships with local educators to increase their use of and participation in the garden and to recruit kids for summer camp activities. Development of fun, interesting, and important food-related curriculum for daycare and K-12 classroom visits, workshops, summer camp, and garden days is always welcome.
