What modality am I teaching in?
Gavilan offers four different course formats –see the legend below.

This class has required Zoom meetings on the days and times listed in the schedule. ilearn.gavilan.edu |
This class has deadlines, but no required meeting times or dates. ilearn.gavilan.edu |
This class meets on campus at scheduled dates and times. |
This class has required on-campus meeting dates/times AND a required online component located at ilearn.gavilan.edu. |
Online Course
This course will be held completely online, with no set meeting days or times. It is not self-paced – there are deadlines during the semester.
OnlineLIVE Course
An online class that will meet via video/web conferencing technology (like Zoom) on the days and times listed in the schedule.
Hybrid or Hyflex Course
A hybrid class that will have a required on-campus portion, held at the days and times listed in the schedule. The required online portion, will be conducted through ilearn.gavilan.edu.
Modality / TYPE Language
Synchronous and asynchronous are not useful words. They confuse people. We recommend:
- Online instead of asynchronous
- OnlineLive instead of synchronous.
- Hybrid if any portion of the course will be conducted online
