New Apprenticeship Helps Paraeducators Become Special Education Teachers

by Public Information Office on Sep 14, 2026

Morgan Hill, CA – State and local education leaders gathered at Britton Middle School on August 26 to launch the Special Education Paraeducator-to-Teacher Apprenticeship Program, a paid pathway that allows participants to work in Morgan Hill Unified School District classrooms while progressing toward a California Education Specialist Credential. Participants can enter at different points along a path from an associate degree to a bachelor's degree and teaching credential.

“Many talented paraeducators are already making a positive impact in classrooms across the county every day,” said Santa Clara County Superintendent of Schools Dr. David M. Toston, Sr. “This pathway ensures they can continue serving students while gaining the education, training, and support needed to become credentialed.”

Hosted by the Santa Clara County Office of Education, the launch brought together participating apprentices and partners from Morgan Hill Unified School District, the Morgan Hill Classified Employees Association, Gavilan Joint Community College District, San Joaquin County Office of Education, the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, and the California Division of Apprenticeship Standards.

The pathway has two entry points. Paraeducators working toward an associate degree can earn it at Gavilan College through tuition-free, flexible, in-person classes offered during evenings and weekends. College graduates can enter a post-baccalaureate residency, completing online credential coursework through Teachers College of San Joaquin while working alongside a mentor teacher in Morgan Hill Unified School District.

“Paraeducators already understand the students, families, and classrooms they serve,” said Gavilan College Superintendent/President Dr. Pedro Avila. “This partnership gives them a realistic way to build on that experience, earn a degree close to home, and move into teaching without stepping away from their work or their community.”

Depending on their entry point and eligibility, participants may receive covered tuition and books, scholarships, or a residency stipend. Apprentices also receive one-on-one mentoring, academic advising, and financial and professional guidance. The program is designed to strengthen the local educator workforce while creating a more accessible path into special education teaching.
