GILROY, CA – March 19, 2024 – The Poppy Jasper International Film Festival (PJIFF) announced this year’s first day of films and opening ceremony will be held at the Gavilan College Theater on Wednesday, April 10.  The first day of the festival will show four blocks of Youth and Student films from 3 pm – 10:30 pm, with a 30-minute opening ceremony at 8 pm.

This film festival includes a program of 267 films from 30 countries, (with films by our own Gav film students), including features, documentaries, short films, music videos and panels.

This is the Opening Day at Gavilan Theater Schedule:

3 PM – Youth & Student Film Festival: Block 1
4 PM – Youth & Student Film Festival: Block 2
6 PM – Youth & Student Film Festival: Block 3
8 PM – Opening Ceremony
8:30 PM – Youth & Student Film Festival: Block 4

The opening ceremony will feature local guests and dignitaries including:
•  Land Acknowledgment by Kanyon "Coyote Woman" Sayers-Roods
•  Performances by the Gav music program

“The Poppy Jasper International Film Festival is dedicated to supporting new and diverse storytellers,” said Festival Director Mattie Scariot.  “We pride ourselves on celebrating film and how the art form can bring audiences together, regardless of what else is going on in the world.  I am so excited and grateful to have Gavilan College host our opening day!”

Gavilan Superintendent/President, Dr. Pedro Avila, enthusiastically shared:

“Mattie has built such a successful and inclusive film festival experience in our community.  We at Gavilan College are so honored to host and invite everyone to our Gilroy campus theater for one of the most monumental days of this festival – the Youth and Student Film Showcase and the opening ceremony.  We are also grateful our students and staff will be attending the opening day and ceremony for FREE!”
