Gavilan College offers GradGuru free to students, a social app reminding them of critical dates, keeping them on track throughout the year to meet their academic goals.
Building on the pathways where students already "walk"
Developed by social entrepreneur Catalina Ruiz-Healy, a San Francisco Bay area consultant and educator, the program was initially tested at Cerro Coso Community College. It has since been adopted by 16 more community colleges. According to Ruiz-Healy, half of all undergrads attend community college, but 70% drop out, often because of missed deadlines.
Based on student personalization, the app
pushes notifications and reminders to help
the student stay current with deadline dates.
Students are already avid users of their phones. This program provides push notifications on 150 critical benchmarks to help students meet critical deadlines for their community college and transfer goals. Key dates are targeted to individual campus deadlines. Once students download the app they receive automatic reminders for every deadline.

This is the first academic year Gavilan College has offered GradGuru. Students were encouraged to sign up at the Welcome Tents to learn about the app, download it and enter a drawing to win a GradGuru scholarship. Gavilan joined neighboring Cabrillo College, Evergreen College and Monterey Peninsula College in adopting the program.
Staff at the Career / Transfer Center have downloaded it onto their own phones to keep critical deadline dates top of mind. It is available for students, staff and faculty to use. Access the program specified for either iPhone or Android phones and select Gavilan College to download the app.
