El Centro

El Centro is Gavilan College’s support center for students and community members. While open to all, the center offers a wide range of services including housing, food, and financial assistance through local partnerships with basic-needs providers. Find a list of El Centro’s services below!


To receive Fall/Spring services, please submit your Basic Needs Referral. After submission, your application will be pre-screened to determine eligibility for the requested service(s). Depending on the services requested, you can expect an email or phone call from us within 7-10 business days.

Service Eligibility

Basic Needs Mini Grant (Credit Student)
$200 grant per Fall/Spring semester for transportation or basic needs.

Basic Needs Card (Non-Credit Student)
Two $100 ATF Visa Card per Fall/Spring semester for transportation or basic needs.

Housing Grants
The amount varies based on student need and available funding.

All students requesting these basic needs services for the Fall/Spring must:
  • Complete the Basic Needs Referral Form
  • Be enrolled in 6 units of equivalent non-credit hours.
  • Credit students must complete FAFSA/ CADAA. Non-Credit students must complete the SAI Calculator. 
  • Have a -$1500 to 0 SAI
  • Submit additional documents requested for housing assistance.
Homeless Assistance
We offer case management, housing referrals, housing grants, hygiene vouchers to use within the Cosmetology Department, and more.
Same as above. In addition, you will need to meet with our Case Manager for additional support.

El Mercado

Daily Snacks, Weekly Family Bags, Food Distribution Sign-Up, and meal credit.

All students requesting Fall/Spring meal credits must:

  • Be enrolled in 6 units of equivalent non-credit hours.

  • Have a -$1500 to 0 SAI

Uber Eligibility Criteria

Residency & Enrollment

  • Students must reside in San Benito County
  • Students must be enrolled in at least one credit or non-credit in-person class located at the Hollister Campus (505 Fairview Rd.)
  • El Centro staff will verify eligibility and contact students within two business days of receiving the request

Uber App Requirements

  • Students must download the Uber App
  • A valid credit card must be linked to the Uber account to cover any costs outside the voucher parameterss

Uber App Requirements

  • Uber vouchers are valid one semester at a time
  • Vouchers cover trips from the student’s home to the Hollister Campus and back, up to two trips per day
  • The Uber voucher will be emailed to the student’s MyGav email address once eligibility is verified

Ongoing Eligibility

  • Enrollment will be verified periodically. If a student drops from an eligible course, the Uber voucher will be canceled

Non-Reimbursable Trips

  • Any Uber trips taken prior to requesting support and before eligibility is verified are not eligible for reimbursement by the college
