Assessment Test Sign-Up

TIPS AND STRATEGIES

 
1. Seats are limited. If you are unable to attend the test, you must cancel online in advance before you will be permitted to sign up for another test date.

2. Study before the test. Advance preparation could result in a higher score on your test, and fewer levels of Math and English to complete. See below under "Study Aids" for links to sample tests. We recommend that you take a practice test to refresh your skills before the day of your assessment appointment.
3. Check-in at least 15 minutes before the scheduled test time. To avoid disrupting the test, doors will be locked and late arrivals will not be permitted to enter and will need to reschedule online.
4. Parking permits are required at the Main campus in Gilroy Monday - Thursday 7:00 am -10:00 pm and Friday 7:00 am - 5:00 pm. Permit vending machines are located in each parking lot and cost $2.00. Machine accepts bills and credit/debit cards.
5. Parking is free at the Hollister and Morgan Hill sites.

If needed, students who take the Gavilan assessment may reassess 1 time only within 15 to 90 days of the original test date. Test results are valid for 2 years from the last assessment taken. Additional re-tests are only available under extenuating circumstances outlined in a formal petition request signed by a Gavilan counselor. It is recommended that students review the sample questions on the Accuplacer site before taking the test for the first time.

Assessment Instructions

 
1. Submit an Application for Admission to Gavilan College online.  Processing time is approximately 2 business days.  (Instructions for logging in to MyGav are on our website  my.gavilan.edu)
2. Once you have a Gavilan ID number, you may click on "Assessment Test Sign-Up" and fill out the online registration form--include a valid email address to receive confirmation of your reservation.  (Students are required to reserve a seat for the assessment.)
3. On the day of the assessment, students must check in 15 minutes BEFORE the scheduled test time.  To avoid disrupting the test, students who arrive late WILL BE turned away and will be required to reschedule.
4. Bring your Gavilan ID number and a Photo ID.  (Valid photo ID includes California Driver's License or Identification Card, Military ID, Passport, or current Student Body Card).
5. Accuplacer is a computerized, untimed assessment tool. Generally, it takes students between 1.5 to 2.5 hours to complete the entire test.
6. Take the assessment.  You will receive a printout with your scores after you finish the test.
7. You may also access your scores when you log into myGav, click on Student tab and look for Assessment Scores link.  Scores will not be given out over the phone or via email.
NOTE:  Calculators and/or dictionaries of any kind, cell phones, watches, pagers or any other wireless devices are not allowed in the testing room.

You must check in 15 minutes before the scheduled test time. The assessment is not timed. Generally, it takes students 1.5 to 2.5 hours to complete the assessment.

Ability To Benefit Schedule  (ATB)

Federal regulations require students  who do not have a high school diploma, General Educational Development (GED) certificate or California High School Proficiency Exam (CHSPE) and who are applying for financial aid, to take an Ability to Benefit assessment.  If  you have a high school diploma (or equivalent) from another country you are exempt. 

Call or come by the Financial Aid Office 408-848-4727 (SC124) to sign up for a session.  Times and locations are subject to change and additional times may be added. Students taking the Ability to Benefit test must valid picture ID, Gavilan ID number, a copy of their class schedule and the yellow referral slip from the Financial Aid Office to be admitted to the testing room.

 

             

High School Testing Sessions

The following dates and times have been scheduled for your high school.  Contact the Counseling Department or Career Center at your high school to schedule an appointment.  You are required to submit a Gavilan Admission Application at least 8 business days before the test.   Bring your Gavilan ID number and a photo ID with you to the test date at your high school location.    See your counselor for more details.

Reminder - ALL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO TAKE BOTH ENGLISH & MATH ASSESSMENTS if desired class has a prerequisite.  To register for a class, please remember to complete a high school contract and have it signed by your high school counselor, principal and parent/guardian.  Bring your completed high school contract to Gavilan College to register for your class(es). High school students must register in person. Online registration is not available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  Who can sign up for the Assessment test?

A:   Any student who has completed an application for admission and been issued a Gavilan ID number.

Q:  What do I need to bring to the test with me?

A:  Your Gavilan ID number and a Photo ID.  

Q:  What time should I arrive to take the test?

A:  You must check in 15 minutes BEFORE the scheduled test time.  If you arrive late, you will not be permitted to take the test at that time to avoid disrupting the test.

Q:  How do I get my scores from the test?

A:  You will receive your scores at the end of the test. Later, you can log into myGav, select the STUDENT tab and look for link to Assessment Scores.

Exemptions From Matriculation Requirements,
Placement Assessment And Orientation

All new, first time college students are required to complete Assessment and Orientation. This will enable students to qualify for priority enrollment.

Students may qualify for an exemption from the new student steps* if they have:

1. Completed an Associate degree or higher.

2. Plan to enroll in courses solely to maintain industry or licensure requirements.

3. Plan to enroll in classes for a reason OTHER than career development or advancement, transfer, attainment of a degree or certificate of achievement, or completion of a basic skills course sequence.

4. Special admit ( concurrently enrolled high school students).

NOTE: Student who are exempt from completting the new student steps may not be eligible for priority registration.

Proctoring Services

The Assessment Office has temporarily stopped providing proctoring services for non-Gavilan purposes. Check back later for more details.
