Food Bank of San Benito County
Mission: The mission of the Food Bank is to provide food assistance to children, seniors, and low-income families of San Benito County in a manner that provides for dignity and responsibility on the part of the recipient.
Activities: Provide supplemental and, increasingly, emergency food. Help clients get benefits for which they qualify. Pick up and deliver food donations; fundraise for BackPack and other programs; oversee construction of new building and community garden, scheduled for 2016-2017.
Needs/Projects this semester:
- Help run the Food Bank Market on Fridays and/or Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Students can re-stock inventory, give information, assist seniors or others, give samples, and do a variety of other tasks that help clients feel comfortable and get what they need.
- Special projects for students with specific skills may be doable.
Who should apply: Students interested in working with and for low income populations. Spanish speakers a plus. Anyone, including student volunteers, are expected to meet the high standards of service to others. In other words, students who can be cheerful, supportive, engaged and upbeat while at the center are welcome. They have extremely high standards, so come prepared to engage 100%. This agency does not do background checks and will accept students who would not be able to pass a background check.
Don’t apply if: You cannot fulfill commitments to put in necessary time or are not able to project a cheerful, engaged, welcoming demeanor. The Food Bank cannot take a student under the age of 16 years unless parents sign permission forms.
Other information: Interested students should wear closed-toe shoes at all times on site. Visit http://communityfoodbankofsbc.org. People working at this non-profit are very busy providing services. Please don't waste their time by setting up meetings you don't attend, come late to, or be absent without very good reason that you communicate in advance. Please be in communication with your supervisor about any questions or concerns you have.
