Hector Barrios
Major: Health Science
My name is Hector Barrios. I am 47 years old and currently attending Gavilan College. As I was
growing up, I experienced hard times in my life. I suffered the disease of addiction, which led to
poor judgment. The mistakes that I made in my life landed me inside prison walls. These
experiences have been a big part of my motivation to change my life. Three years ago, I decided
to go back and get my Associate of Science degree. Then I will be transferring to a radiology
program. I also have empathy for those who are going through similar experiences, and a deeper
understanding of the dedication and motivation needed to get back on track. I have realized one
thing, that life is about giving back and helping others. That's why the Higher Aspirations program
has triggered my interest, because of what it stands for and is willing to do for students like myself.
