UPDATES
Tech Plan: Dena found some formatting errors in the Tech Plan. Fran will check them and give them to Jane for update. The Tech Plan needs to go to the Presidents Council. If it is approved then it may go to the Board for approval. The committee would like to distribute it to more people and get more feedback. We are concerned that people are not seeing it. It hasnt been talked about at all. We would like to invite Jan to our next meeting to talk about the facilities survey and bond issue since some of the same issues are listed in the Tech Plan.
Smart Classrooms: Ed is getting the final sound estimates to complete SS 214. Title V will cover the costs. Many faculty are interested in laptops. This could be our focus for next semester. Dell laptop computers are more expensive than Mac laptops. Customer service and tech support from Dell is very bad. Dena has a good resource for buying laptops. She will give Fran the information. We discussed getting good deals on computers, possibly central buying and auctions.
Catalog & Schedule: Jane E. raised her concern over the Fall schedule cover (both front and back). It represents our technological capabilities in design elements and color. Through an artistic perspective, it is poorly designed. One college student stated that it gave her another reason not to go to Gavilan College if that is the art department's capabilities.
Jane E. talked to Jan about making sure the Catalog cover goes through a committee that specializes in design. She made the recommendation that an artist needs to be on these committees or at least a part of the process. Jane E. offered to do the design as a class project each year. Margery is in charge of these committees. Jane E. will talk with her.
Logs and Blogs: Larry Moeller (tabled to the next meeting)
Dennie's Questions: Where is the appropriate place to discuss these
questions? Jane E. will ask Mimi the answers to these questions.
1. Is there any back up of email?
2. Are any records kept of where staff and faculty connect to the net or do
they keep a record of the history? Which sites?
Discussion followed regarding nasty emails and venting. We have to remember
that email is not secure and can be utilized in court cases, etc. If MIS does
have a backup tape-this could be a union issue. Gavilan should develop some
practices and policies regarding email. Jane M. mentioned the memo from Dr.
Baker on email and confidentiality. She will ask him to attend the next meeting
to explain the policy.
Featured Presentation: Jane M. demonstrated a teaching video made in Camtasia on Custom Animation in PowerPoint 2000.
