UPDATES

Featured Presentation: Arturo gave a presentation on the new multimedia capabilities in Art Lecture 101.

Tech Plan: Fran has given a final copy of the Tech Plan to the Vice President of Instruction and the College President for approval. The plan was discussed at the Admin Council meeting. It will be posted on the Intranet next week. It was suggested to send it to the Faculty Senate, ASB, Managers, President's Council and then to the Board for final approval.

Hybrid Classes: A sub-committee met to discuss the concept of alternative delivery systems and developed a matrix on Technology Enhanced Course Delivery Systems. Fran distributed this handout and the committee discussed the advantages, disadvantages and resources. The committee discussed the strengths and weaknesses of each of the items listed. It was suggested that Tech Support be added to several of the sections. Another suggestion was to look into partnering with Cyber Cafes in the community. Larry shared a San Jose State University article explaining that students will be able to meet in various environments such as: large classrooms, wireless, small groups, face-to-face, online, etc. The concept of learning colleges-anytime, anyplace, and anywhere, was discussed along with learning outcomes. Some colleges are making the students buy laptops and some students with low income will get a free laptop, if they qualify for financial aid.

Larry suggested that we look at the state distance education policy. The Gavilan Distance Education Committee has already discussed several of these ideas and have developed definitions Since there may be curriculum changes, i.e. load time; lecture, online vs. face-to-face, these items will have to be negotiated with the GCFA.

Larry talked about a concept that is called Community Technology Centers that have gotten the interest of governmental agencies. These centers are funded through large grants and written into the Title V/HUD grant already and cannot be located on the campus. CTC is a drop in lab in the community. The first ones were designed under the HUD projects. The concept is that individuals on the wrong side of the digital divide can have access to governmental services online.
