Web Page Standards/Faculty Directory: Jan began the discussion on web
page standards, computer usage guidelines and creating an online faculty directory.
This faculty directory could link to the faculty members home page. A
question was raised regarding the colleges liability on web sites? Jan
distributed the Board Policy regarding computer usage. This policy covers unlawful
messages, commercial usage; information belonging to others; rights of individuals;
user identification; political, personal and commercial use. There was also
discussion on whether or not we are allowed to have sponsorship links or any
solicitations on our web pages. For example, even if you published your own
book, you cannot advertise it on your web site.
Marty stated that since public funds are being used to establish web pages,
we must be professional with professional information. We need to establish
a difference between professional information and professional use vs. personal
information and personal use. The question was raised about including professional
organizations on your web site. Marty stated that a good test is would
you include it on your
resume?
The question was raised if we should have a template? It was stated that this is a Faculty Development issue. The template will be available for faculty to use but if they go in the other direction and create their own pagethe tip sheet will give them a list of what they need to do (i.e. bobby compliant). Vic mentioned the importance of web accessibility. Since public funds are being used to establish web sites, then they need to be accessible for students with disabilities. The question is who should police it. Jane stated that faculty could build in accessibility at the start with universal design. She stated that there has been information on the Gavilan Access Tips web site for a couple of years.
The committee suggested that we put together this tip sheet for acceptable web page guidelines and/ or standards. This handout will include computer usage guidelines, rules for web accessibility and possibly web page standards. These web standards will be general not specific to allow departments to put their own personalities on their own sites. Vic, Jane & JoAnne will get all the comments, edit them and put them out to all the faculty and let them know what they can do. Send Vic your comments.
JoAnne said she would look for the brochure on webpage guidelines that was created by the past Webhead committee for a beginning. Once this new handout has been circulated on campus, we will publicize it, get final proposal and then go through the Board for adoption.
JoAnne said she would talk to Peter about creating the online Faculty Directory database. Peter said that it would take 20 hours initially to set up this database and then 10 minutes per faculty member. This database would include the instructors background education and courses that they teach with a link to their home page. We discussed adding part-time faculty and since they change every semester, we decided that we would not include them at this time unless someone has time to update it. At the next meeting , we will look at JoAnnes template and some sample pages.
Bob B. asked if Gavilan supports a standards organization or a corporation for our browser? He raised the question: is there a standards organization that sets the standards for Microsoft since we might have to move to Internet Explorer? Should we move to an open source browser? It was mentioned that the Gavilan Home Page does not work well with a Macintosh and Internet Explorer.
Channel 18: Fran distributed a handout on What is Gav-TV and CMAP? Currently the Gavilan channel has 3 shows-The Gavilan Hour, Gavilan Connection and Art is Essential. There is a television in Frans office and anyone is welcome to come in and view the channel. The handout lists the Gav-TVs telecourses and educational programming. There is a section on How can you use it? with Marilyn Abads contact information.
CMAP: This section defines CMAP as Community Media Access Partnership and the umbrella for the four access channels: Public (Channel 20), Education (Channel 18 and 19), Government (Channel 17). There is a section on How can you use it? with CMAPs contact information.
CMAP is trying to be flexible with instructors and students to put together projects. A lot of the editing is being done in the digital media lab. Bob talked about Grant Richards film class and how they sign up CSIS 108 and track hours to get credit for it. CMAP and the Digital Media lab are sharing the resources. Suzanne is looking into doing video on demand next year. It is currently available on their playback system.
Marlene asked if we can currently watch a video during our class? Suzanne stated that Jan James can schedule it. Suzanne explained that there are 50 sites with iNet. They receive video or direct traffic to all high schools, grade schools, and libraries, i.e. storytime. They can send video out live. Charter has offered to sell at cost any additional equipment that may be needed.
There will be an Open House on November 11, 2003 in the Digital Media lab from 4-7pm. Library 128 & CMAP. They have invited the Board members to watch the playback.
Technology Bylaws: The Bylaws Committee will meet. Fran will send out an email to coordinate times.
