2. Updates
Staff Resource Center: JoAnne and the SRC equipment has been moved to the OE building. Her office in OE has 2 computers currently connected to the Internet. JoAnne is currently assisting faculty and staff in their offices. She is waiting for the electrical outlets and connections for the copier, scanners and printers. The cable is in the ceiling ready to be dropped once the walls are built to complete the SRC. It was suggested that we purchase dustcovers for all the equipment due to the current environment.
Bob Beede announced that a MacIntosh (with OS X) computer station will be available in BU 106 from 9-3pm daily where you can burn a CD, print, do digital video editing, and is cross platform. Bob will be there to assist on Thursdays after 2pm.
Webmaster: Mimi stated that our part time webmaster started last week (Peter Howell). His first priority is to update the catalog. He is currently on campus Tuesdays and Thursdays until the end of June. You can reach him at webmaster@gavilan.edu or phowell@gavilan.edu.
Multimedia Classrooms: The Multimedia Classroom Task Force will meet on April 15, 2002 at 2pm in L171.
Tech Committee Chair: Fran will be vacating the Chair as of June 10, 2002. Where do we want to go? It was asked of Fran to keep the position until the end of the year? It was suggested that a faculty member be the chair since we already have an administrative representative (T. Phillips). The chair position will be given 20% reassigned time. The question was raised whether our committee is a subcommittee of the Academic Senate. Currently the Tech Committee is not a Senate Subcommittee because it has representatives from all the various areas.
CVC/WebCT: As of 2003-2004, CVC will not be able to support WebCT and Blackboard for colleges so Gavilan should budget for the basic licensing costs of our course management system for online classes. Since our numbers are below 600, our cost for WebCT will be approximately $3800. It was suggested to look into other templates such as Macromedia Suite, and Cerro Coso's, or designing our own. The suggested benefits of using WebCT are that students are familiar with it and won't have to relearn a new design, it is straightforward to follow, the grading features, the quizmaker and the bulletin board capabilities are all functions that are hard to replace. One option for a free bulletin board is from nicenet.com.

3. Discussion
Lab Availability: Lab Availability-Since labs (such as the: Math computer lab, Hollister, Morgan Hill, CAD Lab, etc.) are owned by disciplines and are unused in the evening, Dennie Van Tassel asked Fran to raise the question of lab availability.
The topic of sharing labs was discussed. If the software suites are compatible, it could easily be arranged with the use of images, etc. The question was raised specifically about the CAD, ESL & Math labs. Bob Peacock said sharing his CAD lab would be difficult because of high level software programs; however, it is a management issue and support issue. Marlene Dwyer said the same thing about the math lab; there are already part-time people teaching in the evening and open lab in the evening. Problems and suggestions mentioned are:
- Centurian-model lab to be used by music, English, art and multimedia.
- One lab where everyone can go to get it all in one place-
- Running 3 different classes with removable HD disk drives?
- Flexibility-security-monitoring with log on & log off capabilities.
Fran was asked to get back to Dennie on what he needs, when, what kind of software? Teaching classes in the lab?
Training: Tabled to the next meeting.
Online Classes: The question was raised about the college supporting online education and the topics of course management, support services, and online web registration. Where else on campus are these issues discussed? These issues are covered in the Tech Plan. It was suggested that these issues should be discussed within the Academic Senate and other committees on campus.
Web Pages: Next semester, Bob Beede will be teaching a Digital Media Production course. The students will be doing production work (such as Departmental Web Pages) for their course requirements.
