UPDATES

Tech Plan: The TAC committee is working on a draft to distribute to the Tech Committee for their review by January. There are currently two classes of objectives.

Tech Conference: Fran and Jane E. attended the League for Innovation Conference in Long Beach. They attended a 3-hour session on developing a technology plan. This session was not very helpful; however, they did get a CD-rom to review. They attended great sessions on Macromedia, Windows XP; developing hologram images; learning objects and creating a project as a virtual learning unit.

Online vs. Phone Registration: Shuk asked us to discuss the topic of online and phone registration. Telephone registration is no longer cost effective. We have other crucial technology needs before we spend the money on telephone registration. Gavilan has chosen to stay with the Santa Rosa system because it is not as expensive; however, it is mandated that we have a programmer to change, update and modify the data, etc. faculty load, etc. Since telephone registration is just as expensive as online registration, can we move to online registration first? After discussion, the tech committee agreed that there is a better alternative to phone registration and would like to bring our recommendations to the President's Council.

Motion: Given the changes in technology, the committee recommends online registration as the most accessible, cost-effective option consistent with the long-term strategic and technology plans. All agreed. Fran L. will present our motion to the President's Council.

Computer Replacement Plan: Bob Beede asked if we have included a computer replacement schedule into the Technology Plan. It is very important that this issue and the also the limited space issue in computer labs be discussed in the plan. To deal with the limited space issues, he suggested purchasing a smaller monitor and computer unit.

SPAM e-mails: Larry raised the concern about getting too many spam e-mails. He also mentioned that you should not unsubscribe to any message because it puts you on more lists. Fran will talk to MIS about this issue.

Microsoft Windows Support: Larry said that Microsoft has insinuated that they will discontinue Windows 95 support and 98 will be discontinued. Windows XP is supposed to be more stable but most of the hardware on campus is not capable of running XP. The college needs to budget for this issue of upgrading hardware to utilize XP.

Sabbatical Proposal: Andrea Uram is applying for sabbatical and it is technology related. She would like the committee to review it and give comments to her by email. Her personal email is attached to the document.

FEATURED PRESENTATIONS

Gavilan TV: Marilyn Abad gave a presentation on the new Gavilan TV Channel. To begin, the Gav Channel will feature free programming--satellite downloads through CMAP in the areas of science, education, and the arts. There will be a special, intensive training to create a Gavilan College crew from January 6-10, 6am-10pm, for interested faculty and staff. Those who take the training will be committed to volunteering during the spring semester. There will be no original programming until around the middle of February. Since the Gav Channel is a curated station, it does not have to comply with the 1st Amendment rights. The station will project a positive image with fair and balanced stories and will follow the Strategic Plan. Their new webpage will be hhh.gavtv.edu.
