The STEM Symposium - Learn about the amazing panel of guest speakers:
It seems like just yesterday the 3 day STEM Symposium was set to begin. The STEM Symposium was offered Monday, August 17th - Wednesday, August 19th to all incoming Fall 2020 STEM Academy members. Led by STEM interim counselor Vania Parakati online via Zoom for the first time, it was packed with valuable insight from Gavilan STEM faculty, current and former STEM students, and knowledgeble guest speakers!

STEVE ALBRIGO, Mechanical Design Engineer, SpaceX Steve Albrigo is an experienced Mechanical Engineer with a long career in designing microwave antennas, high power amplifiers, radar components, and systems to meet harsh naval shock, space launch, airborne and mobile random vibration environments. He has held lead roles in several companies, including most recently at SpaceX, where he is working on integrating RF equipment into the Dragon 2 spacecraft. He holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Cal Poly-Pomona. |

LALEH COTÉ, STEM Education Researcher, UC Berkeley Laleh Coté is former Gavilan College student. She obtained her A.A. and A.S. degrees from Laney College, then graduated from San Francisco State University with a B.A. in Biology. She works as a STEM Education Specialist in Workforce Development & Education at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and is a 5th year PhD student in the Graduate Group in Science & Mathematics Education (SESAME) at UC Berkeley. Her research centers on student outcomes and mentoring practices in science research experiences and increasing diversity in STEM by addressing issues of equity and access. |

ASHLEY HOYT, Veterinarian, Gilroy Veterinary Hospital Ashley attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo as an Animal Science major and then graduated UC Davis Veterinary School in 2013. She has worked in private practice and in emergency medicine. Ashley enjoys working with clients and their furry family members to help give their pets the best life they can have. She enjoys traveling, running, and enjoying family as much as possible, especially since returning to California after four years living on the east coast. She has a cat, Thumper, and a Miniature Australian Shepherd, Effie, that keep her on her toes. |

FRANK HUYNH, Assistant Professor, SJSU, Biological Sciences Dr. Huynh obtained a B.S. in Biochemistry and PhD in Physiology from the University of British Columbia, where he studied the effects of the appetite-suppressing hormone leptin on regulating glucose and lipid metabolism. He completed his training at Duke University Medical Center, where he studied the metabolic functions of a family of enzymes called sirtuins, thought to have anti-aging properties. In his own lab at San Jose State University, he continues to investigate how nutrients are metabolized and how this contributes to both normal and pathological processes. |

CLAIRE KOMIVES, Professor, SJSU, Chemical Engineering Dr. Komives obtained a PhD in Chemical Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh and did post-doctoral research at the ETH Zurich in Switzerland. She has held positions at the U.S. Agency for International Development with a focus on Child Health Research, DuPont, Genencor (now also DuPont), IIT Delhi and San Jose State University. She completed a Fulbright-Nehru fellowship award to pursue her current research in the expression and purification of a snake anti-venom peptide from the American opossum in bacteria. At SJSU she has graduated 20 Master’s students and received over $1 million in grants including from the National Science Foundation and an Indo-US Collaborative Research grant with IIT Delhi from the National Institute of Health. |

RONALD WELTEN, Crop Scientist, Owner, Welten Farms Ronald started his career in the Netherlands with Rijk Zwaan, an international vegetable breeding company, where as a Farm Manager he oversaw open-field breeding trials. He then moved to France and finally to the U.S. in 2008, to work for Enza Zaden Research. Since then he has worked for several local companies, including United Genetics Seeds in Hollister and Syngenta in Gilroy. In 2014 he launched his own independent contracting company for vegetable R&D trials. He also owns a certified organic produce business, selling berries and specialty vegetables to several Michelin star-rated restaurants in the SF Bay Area. He received his B.S. from University of Pretoria and his M.S. in Crop Science from Wageningen University. |

Have you ever thought of pursuing a career in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM)?

Gavilan College has been awarded three successive STEM grants (News) through the Department of Education to build our programs and support our students.
Academic support: Supplemental Instruction, Academic Excellence Workshops (AEW), in class tutoring, the Math Lab, the STEM Center, and Math Boot Camps will help you with the rigorous academic requirements of STEM courses. |
Employment Opportunities: We hire student tutors for the Math lab, the STEM Center, as Supplemental Instruction Leaders, and as in class tutors. We also offer training for these positions. |
Paid Summer Internships: Students gain valuable work experience doing research with Professors from San Jose State or working in private industry after the second or third year of coursework. |
The STEM Academy: This summer program provides; information on STEM careers and educational opportunities; assistance with writing resumes, getting financial aid and scholarships, applying for internships and four year universities; connection to other students, campus resources and services, and preparation for math. Accelerated Math Classes: Get wo semesters of Math completed in one semester and develop confidence and mastery in math to provide a strong preparation for future courses. |
MESA Program: Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) Community College Program provided academic development to educationally disadvantaged undergraduate community college students so they will excel academically and transfer to four-year institutions in calculus-based majors. |
