City of Gilroy Recreation Youth Program
Mission :
The City of Gilroy Recreation Department is committed to engaging youth in programs that support and enhance their quality of life. Programming is designed to be fun and interactive, while teaching youth life skills and helping to mold their character so that they grow up to be productive and responsible members in our community.
Activities:
The Recreation Department is proud to provide quality and affordable classes, programs and special events to meet the recreational needs of local children, youth, adults, seniors and families.
Needs this semester:
Gym programs: Youth can come and play everything from chess to basketball in a pro-social, fun environment; kids also get a meal each gym night. Girls and boys ages 10-17 meet on Tuesday nights from 5:30-9 p.m.at Wheeler Gym, while youth ages 12-17 meet on Friday nights from 6-9 at Cesar E. Chavez Gym. Up to four or five Gavilan students a night can work at this site.
After-school programs: Monday-Thursday from 3-6 p.m. at Cesar E. Chavez gym, youth work on homework for first hour, then work on games, arts and crafts, field trips, and other skills. Nutritious snack is part of the program. Up to five students a day can work at this site.
Conflict resolution students will be asked to design and teach skills useful to youth during their time with the program.
Who should apply: Young adults who are good role models are needed to be peer mentors to kids, working with them on sports and life skills. Getting to know the kids and supporting them is key. Knowledge of community a plus. Gavilan students must pass criminal background checks and TB tests (TB test within last three years is okay.) Must enjoy working with youth. ONLY students who have attended an orientation will be invited to work at this site.
Who should not apply: Anyone with felonies for child abuse, sex crimes, gang involvement in their backgrounds would not pass the background check.
Special Notes: Employees at this non-profit are busy providing valuable services. Please respect their time by arriving on time and notifying them if you have an emergency that prevents you from attending a session to which you have previously committed. Before being interviewed, you will need to register online for volunteer opportunities. Follow this link to access.
