Powerschool: YMCA After School Program

Mission: Power school and Super Power Summer Camp support students through expanded learning opportunities that build confidence, self-sufficiency, academic success, and social responsibility.

Activities: Grant-funded program run through GUSD by Mt. Madonna YMCA to give extra help to K-5 students who are from at-risk backgrounds with academic support, recreation, nutrition, enrichment, plus a snack.

Needs this semester: Gavilan students would guide after-school participants through academic activities, and help with hands-on work –T/Th nutritional curriculum, M/W culture curriculum, or Fridays club work. Interested Gavilan students could start Friday Clubs on topics of interest, such as Conflict Resolution or Leadership. Program is centered at Rucker Elementary. After School hours are:

  • Mon/Tue/Thu/Fri: 2:00pm-6:00pm
  • Wed: 1:00pm-6:00pm

Who should apply: Anyone who enjoys working with kids and who can pass a LiveScan background check (students who cannot, see below.) Applicants need volunteer form and reference check form (ask site supervisor to provide), then fingerprinting form needs to be filled out and submitted online for an appointment. This agency can take many students.

Who should not apply: Students with criminal backgrounds cannot do this work, unfortunately students who dislike kids should try another site.

SPECIAL INFO: Website: https://www.ymcasv.org/mtmadonna/index.html. Students should always wear comfortable shoes they could run in--no flip-flops! Jeans are fine. A volunteer badge will be provided to those students who work at this agency, and should be worn at the site when students are doing service there. Interested students should use the contact information below to begin application process. Employees at Power School are very dedicated, caring, and occupied providing valuable services. Please respect staff time by calling and making appointments, arriving on time, and keeping your discussion brief and concise. Please call ahead if you are not able to make your appointment or have an emergency which prevents you from arriving on time.

Plan to attend an orientation (one only; don't need to come to more than one) as orientation is mandatory. Orientations will be at the Rucker PowerSchool Office, 325 Santa Clara Ave, Gilroy (Room 27, BACK PARKING LOT 6th St Side). Orientation dates (attend only one of the three dates):

  • Thursday, 2/13 from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m.
  • Monday, 2/24 from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m.
  • Tuesday, 2/25 from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m.
  • Orientation location: Rucker PowerSchool Office, 325 Santa Clara Ave, Gilroy (Room C, BACK PARKING LOT 6th St Side)
