Learning and Loving Education Center
Mission: The Learning and Loving Education Center was established to hospitably teach skills, foster hopes, and provide direction to marginalized immigrant students who are limited by illiteracy, poverty, and lack of access to educational opportunities and services to improve their lives and the lives of their families. Our programs teach skills that assist underserved populations in overcoming the multiple barriers to education, literacy, employment and self-reliance.
Activities: English classes and computer classes with volunteer credentialed teachers. Counseling. Information and referrals to other agencies. Sharing room with donated clothes, household items. Some health services, pre-school for clients' children. ESL and computer classes for immigrant women and a pre-school program that teaches ESL and pre-kinder classes to 2 to 3 year olds and 4 to 5 year olds.
Needs/Projects this semester: Mini-classes or workshops on sewing, money management, music, art, computers, health, sexuality, and/or other interests; oral histories; current events discussion group; fundraising events participation; consumer education, consumer advocacy needed. Students might also do follow-up after clients have moved on to see what other needs they have, assess satisfaction with services. Some students aid in classrooms with English or other skills under teachers' supervision. Up to five Gavilan students could assist or run classes between 8:30 a.m. to noon. M-F. Please note that the center will be closed from 2/17-2/21. The center will re-open on Monday, 2/24. Students may also work in preschool playing, reading, doing projects with children. This is a key area of need, and male as well as female students are welcome.
Who should apply: Personable, hospitable students who appreciate contributions made by immigrants; students who can work with clients who are learning English or may have special needs. Because of the preferences of many immigrant populations being served to limit contact with men who are unknown, male students may work in the pre-school or alongside teachers in the adult classrooms or tutoring at this agency. Students need instructor recommendation before applying at this organization.
Who not should apply: Do not apply to the Learning and Loving Education Center if you are not prepared to be open, engaged, and enthusiastic. Students with criminal records probably would not be okayed for work at this agency. If you are concerned about criminal history, it is recommended that you check in with the site supervisor, Lynn Hasbany.
