Live Oak Adult Day Services
Mission:
Live Oak Adult Day Services keeps seniors in the community, rather than unnecessarily in nursing homes, by providing day time care, entertainment, and enrichment activities that give respite to family and caregivers.
Activities:
Daily breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack, sit-down exercise, guest speakers, visits with children, visits with pets, bingo, dance groups, music and singalongs, arts and crafts, discussion groups. Full day activities are offered, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday to Friday.
Needs this semester:
Volunteers to talk to clients on-on-one and should lead at least two program sessions (bingo, dance, games, etc.). Students should help with existing programs but can also propose new programs of interest to seniors. Students should think about their own areas of interest and how they can benefit the clients by sharing these skills (i.e. if you sing, you could sing to seniors). California History students may work with clients to do document/relic and oral histories. Students in Research Methodologies class can work to define, design, and carry out a needs assessment in conjunction with agency staff. Number of students who can volunteer at this agency is large as students can work one on one with clients.
Who should apply:
Outgoing students who can take the initiative; students must be energetic, patient, able to work well with elder adults who may have disabilities. Motivational skills, to get people up and moving or participating, useful. Students do not need to set a schedule for the semester and go do drop-in hours 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday to Friday.
Who should not apply:
Anyone who does not like being around people with disabilities or seniors. Students with a criminal background of any kind are asked to disclose their history and cannot be placed at this agency, as they would be working with a vulnerable population. Students who are smokers are asked to not smoke the day of their service because of many clients who are at risk due to smoke sensitivity or tobacco-related illness.
