Become a Peer Educator
in the Learning Commons and the Writing Center
Peer educator positions in the Learning Commons and the Writing Center involve working one-on-one and in groups assisting students with their reading and writing and helping them develop the study skills and learning strategies they need to succeed in college. The positions also involve helping students access the services and resources available to them in the Learning Commons and Writing Center, connecting students to other campus resources, working with faculty and other students, and undergoing peer educator training.
Students from ANY discipline are encouraged to apply. Our peer educators come from many disciplines, including kinesiology, English, Biology, Child Development, and Communications, and we are looking to continue that diversity. We invite all kinds of people with different life experiences, personalities, academic goals, and backgrounds to apply because we know the more variety we have on our staff, the better we are at meeting the needs of Gavilan’s diverse student body. Students don’t have to be a straight A student or an expert reader or writer but should have a strong desire to help others and improve their own writing, research, and study skills.
Starting pay rate is $11 per hour.
All Peer Educators in the Learning Commons and Writing Center should have the following minimum qualifications:
- Enrolled in at least 6 units at Gavilan during the fall and spring semesters while employed
- Able to support the mission of the Writing Center and the Learning Commons programs
- Completion of English 12A (2 units) during the summer or winter session prior to working and completion of English 12B (1 unit) during the first fall or spring semester employed
