Present: Jan, Mary, Robert, Leah, Veronica, a small but spirited group
Next Stand Together meeting: May 16, 1:30 p.m. in HU 101Report on curriculum: We looked at the work done by the group that has been
working to add a cultural diversity requirement to the GE for AA list; this
discussion will be opened at the curriculum committee on Monday by Louise,
Karen Warren, Denise Besson, Mark Levine, and Leah. No units need be added
as these classes can be counted twice. We also looked at their philosophical
rationale for the change, which in its new form reads:
--
Cultural Diversity: Courses in this area will promote understanding of
cultures and subculture, and foster cultural awareness, inclusiveness, and
mutual respect among diverse peoples. Students will be familiar with some of
the many varieities of human diversity, and will learn to closely examine
various cultures to understand how they develop, their dynamism and
complexities.
--
Report on staff training: NCBI will do our fall training with a morning
program for everyone, very hands-on and focussed on our personal areas of
inclusiveness and intolerance, and then a more limited afternoon program for
at least forty people. Suzanne is checking whether students can be invited,
and whether the p.m. session might not be bigger. Leah will check with
library staff to see whether we can have a table with relevant library
materials.
--
Report on events/activities: We went back over the previous meeting's list
and updated with new information as follows. This list can now go out to all
staff so people can begin planning classe and complimentary activities.
--
El Grito/Sept. 16 possible focus on Chiapas struggle for independence/self
determination--ASB & Stand Together group led by Veronica. We discussed
ideas for this and Veronica will begin formulating a plan.
--
Oct. 1--Convocation/gathering/bridge/hands xx campus to celebrate the
college's diversity and to kick off Disability Awareness Month--Louise,
DSPS. Planning on this should start soon. Leah will ask those in charge.
--
Oct. 11--National Coming Out Day, or possibly Week--Leslie, Leah, Jen. Leah
has information about Triangle speakers and others; we could do an entire
week.
--
Nov. 1-2--Dia de los Muertos--ASB hopefully with Art Dept. Veronica will
check with both re: their plans.
--
Nov.--Native American Heritage Month--first of a series of fliers for
posting around campus to educate everyone about the month's meaning and
importance--Veronica, Terrence, Margaret, Leah. Discussion about what the
flier should include very helpful.
--
Dec. 2 World AIDS Day--Robert will ask Alice whether she could coordinate.
--
Dec. 10--UN Human Rights Day International Day--Leslie approached Elena
Dachkova, who was very open and is taking the idea to the new International
Club.
--
Feb. 5--Chinese New Year celebration--Julie Chui.
--
Feb.--Black History Month including Terrence Roberts from the MOT as a
speaker--Leah, Audren, Veronica, ASB. Leah will ask T. Roberts soon, and see
whether he could come partly for staff development and partly to interact
with students. Fliers as for Nov. would be developed.
--
March--Women's History Month--Audren with help from the History Dept. and
others. Fliers as for Nov. would be developed.
--
May--Asian-American Heritage Month--Karen Warren is willing to pull this
together, and will do a great job. Fliers as for Nov. would be developed.
--
May 15--Bike to Work Day---Terrence.
--
Policies: The Admin Cabinet is looking at the anti-hate crime proposal.
Steve Smith's students should be ready soon with general campus safety plan
recommendations. We looked at and made small but important changes in the
new academic freedom policy, which Leah will communicate to Marty. Vero,
Robert and Leah will meet to do the line by line work that remains on a
general commitment to diversity policy, and this can be the first item of
business of May 16 so we get some closure on it.
--
Website: Jen is working on this. Jan brought four very nice possible logos
developed by her work study student Cindy Willette. We gave some feedback
and with a few changes, we will have a color logo (also lovely in b/w) very
soon.
--
Mediations: It was noted that it would be wonderful if the Stand Together
group eventually were able to help the college institute a mediation
program, in which people with disagreements who were committed to working
them out could request trained mediators to do so. Something for future
thought. Another future thought: We would like to celebrate Native American
Heritage Month in Nov. 2003, though it will take much careful planning.
