Stand Together Group

Back to minutes

March 7, 2002 Minutes

NOTE: The meeting scheduled for this Thursday, March 21 conflicts with a scheduled mural forum. Some of us have been to one mural forum, but we don't want to drain interest from that event, nor to have a meeting of only two or three. Please RSVP to me if you can and will come to Stand Together on Thursday, and I will notify the list by Weds. whether we have enough to make a meeting. --Leah

Minutes of March 7--List of those present is not available, but it was a
sizeable group!

*Hate crime procedures: After some discussion, the group suggested two
immediate items for action by the Security Department and/or administration,
and some longer term items.
Immediate--
1. Add a few more spots around campus for the distribution of the regular
(weekly) crime log. One could be in Student Center, one in library, one
perhaps in gym. Unclear who would travel around to post these
notices--security staff? PIO? The administration and/or Security would
hopefully work this out and then--
2. Notify all staff of all the new and old places where the log is
posted--via email and perhaps a note in boxes.
Longer term solutions to be studied--
--when a hate crime happens, e-mail log type info to all staff.
--implement broader security alert system on campus; wait for Steve Smith's
students' recommendations to design this
--weekly email summary of crimes, perhaps by PIO
--ask Rambler for more regular coverage of crimes
--updates on website, by PIO or other/s
--distinguish between routine crimes and crisis crimes so crisis crimes are
communicated to staff in a timely manner
Audren, Steve, and Leah agreed to work on this further, especially when
Steve has student results. Ana of course will be involved as much as her
time permits.

*Staff Development. Suzanne reported that the group met and was conflicted
about what we wanted it to plan for the fall SD day. Clarification: a
session with hands-on work using a number of skilled facilitators about our
own areas of intolerance. The group will take this and come up with
suggested speakers/facilitators/programs.

*Events/activities. Leslie and Veronica reported that a wonderful series of
events is planned to honor Cesar Chavez's birthday (April 1) during the
preceding week. There will be films, health screenings, art work, pesticide
facts, music, UFW time line, community organizations, and more. Leslie is
overall contact, Veronica is program contact, Rich Alfara will do outreach,
and Mauricio (of Trio--sorry, I don't have a last name) will handle
logistics. They are eager for volunteers who can help with specific tasks.
Any volunteers? There will also be two March 27 Women's History Month
reenactment events; watch email for details.

*Curriculum. A group met and is working on a suggested list of classes for
the AA degree that will fulfill the GE multicultural requirement the group
is busy defining. More on this later as it is a big task and just started.

*Board policies. Leah distributed draft copies. Marty said his office
already did an academic freedom policy (which he has already forwarded to
Leah for sharing with the group.) So we just need to look at the ones from
CCL and then pass them along, and draft something on hate crimes
specifically, which needs to be added to one of the sections the Board has
already passed. We can look at these at the next meeting.

Meeting adjourned.
