Staff Development Day: Jan will use the checklist to generate discussion of events past and future for the college and for STG consideration, as part of our outreach and planning. Please attend one of the two sessions if you can, and we can get some planning done ourselves, with input from others. We may also recruit a few souls.

Review of recent events: Chinese New Year was awesome. The ASB did a great job. We all really loved it. And the Science Alive kids saw the wonderful exhibit and responded positively. Good work, especially by Julie!

Terrence Roberts was also wonderful. Leah will thank the ASB. Vercila reported that she met someone how is interested in helping with a panel shoot and/or documentary about African American life in Silicon Valley. She is going to follow up, if not for this year then for next. Leah is meeting with Rev. Gerald Harris of Bethany Church next week to talk about working together. The flier is just about distributed and next time we need more graphics! Help!

Women's History Month: Audren discussed the idea of having a day of appreciation for men and women who have helped another or others overcome obstacles or realize dreams. We discussed how to advertise this and how to make it happen with virtually no budget. Audren will talk to Alice to see if it could fit into Daffodil Days in late March. She will report back next time. All publicity for the event should be inclusive and state that all are welcome.

GLBT benefits (NOTE: Marty wished the minutes to show that he abstained from this discussion): We agreed that we should write a statement regarding our belief that not providing domestic partner benefits is discriminatory, and we will ask the district and unions to rectify the situation. We will attach some model policies such as Cabrillo's, which Audren agreed to research.

Nonviolence work: Karen organized an anti-war open mike against the war for Feb. 12, and it will be part of a national movement of 4000 poets/poems against war in Iraq. Discussion about how to get Stand Together Sponsorship for a quickly-organized event; she did use the checklist as far as it was possible. Agreement that people in the future should email the group to see whether anyone has negative feelings about STG sponsorship. Any negative feelings will mean we must either discuss or not sponsor. Leslie said John Baker is willing to help with some sort of event, one-time or on-going at the gazebo, but needs more suggestions/information. Leah has still to contat Marc T. re: a forum on the war. Leah will share nonviolence bumperstickers and leaflets with Karen, who would like to join her tabling effort. They are doing this on their own, but did agree that it is important that students in the reserves do not feel criticized for their choices.

Budget lobbying week--The ASB will pay for two buses for March 17, a statewide lobbying day in Sacramento. They will also do a letter-writing campaign. We suggested they visit Farr, Salinas, and the governor's office. The STG is officially endorsing the lobbying day actions and will encourage students to go, as officials need to see students' faces and hear their stories. The group that's organizing this (not STG) will ask teachers to help make this a classroom assignment or  extra credit. A broad approach, with no individual programs specifically targeted for cuts but everyone sharing the pain, should be part of the message.

Bylaws--Terrence distributed a draft which we will look at more closely next time. Marty commented that we might want to have two reps from each college constituency rather than the one mentioned.

May 15 will be Bike to Work/School day; Terrence is hoping to get Athletic Dept. and local merchants collaborating. He may expand this to more than one day, and will report. He and other Santa Cruz brothers and sisters will bike over the hill that morning and want muffins, etc. on this side waiting for them.

Tenure for Vercila--(NOTE: Marty wished the minutes to show that he left before this discussion began) After discussion, the group decided not to make a formal statement at the Feb. 11  board meeting, but to ask any STG speakers to mention their affiliation, to ask Suzanne to make her statement available to the Board, and to continue to give Vercila personal and professional support in other ways as individuals who care about the college's direction.

Agenda items for Feb. 24: planning for next year, bylaws, GLBT issues in general and domestic partners in particular, process for sponsorship by STG, nonviolence/anti-war work, campus climate survey.
