Redding, CA-The Gavilan College Women’s Volleyball completed their tour of California pre-season schedule, in which the Rams traveled over 1,900 miles, with two victories on Saturday.  The two victories came against College of the Siskiyous and four year NAIA member Simpson University.

The Rams began the day playing Simpson University on the Red Hawks home floor due to a last minute venue change, and came away with a four set victory 25-8, 25-16, 27-25 and 25-20.  Sabina Gerard ran the offense to its most balance and precise performance of the year with 47 assists. The Rams had three players in double digit kills and another who was one kill shy of making it four. Tazi Apple’s 15 led the way, but teammates Jessica Stofer (12 kills), Andreinna Castaneda (12 kills) and Savanna Hartman (9 kills) were not far behind. Defensively the Rams had four players is double digit digs. Libero Karina Daniels had 23 and was followed by Daisy Valladares (14 digs), Brittani Siaz (11digs), and Raelynn Heredia (11 digs). From the service line, the Rams had another strong performance accumulating 9 aces in the match with Daniels (3 aces), Apple (2 aces), Siaz (2 aces), Valladares (2 aces).

Match two found more of the same for the Gavilan College with a four set victory against College of the Siskiyous 25-20, 25-21, 22-25, 25-17.  Continuing the trend of strong serving the Rams found themselves with 11 aces from seven different players. Daniels (4 aces) and Apple (2 aces) set the tone from the line. Of the 37 balls Daniels served in both the Simpson and Siskiyous matches, only 10 of those serves were passed well enough that a front row player was able to hit a ball from their setter.  Add another 45 assists to the season total for Gerard who again ran a balanced attack. On the other end of those assists were Apple (15 kills), Stofer (11 kills), Hartman (10 kills), and Castaneda (8 kills).  20 digs from Daniels led the way with Heredia chipping in with 13 of her own.

With the preseason schedule now finished, Gavilan now prepares for Coast Conference play. There will be three cross-over matches with last year’s top three finisher from the Coast Conference North Division. Wednesday night in Cupertino the Rams will take on De Anza College before Friday night’s home opener against Monterey Peninsula College. To finish the cross-over section of the schedule the Rams will take to the road to play Cabrillo College on October 2. Follow the matches on the Gavilan College Facebook page.
