Fremont, CA- Last season the Ohlone College was the only team to beat the Gavilan College Women’s Volleyball Team in Coast Conference play. The loss would be avenged by the Rams in a five set classic four weeks later. So heading into this year’s Coast Conference opener against Ohlone, the Rams knew they would be in for a tough, hard fought match and that is exactly what they got in a four set victory 21-25,25-22,25-17,25-22.

For the first time all season, the Rams had two player record a double double. Sabina Gerard handed out 46 assists while recording 10 digs. This is the fourth time this season that Gerard has recorded 40 assists or more. Savanna Hartman also scored her first career double double with 10 kills to go along with 10 digs. Tazi Apple led the team offensively with 19 kills. The Rams also got a big boost from Andreinna Castaneda who came into to the game late in the second set to record 8 kills of her own, on only 14 swings on the night. Castaneda also had 3 blocks.

For only the second time all season the Ram’s defense posted a triple digit digging night with 100 digs as a team, with the previous time coming in a five set victory against De Anza College. Led by Karina Daniels (31 digs), Daisy Valladares (19 digs), Raelynn Heredia (13 digs), the defensive was able to keep Ohlone’s biggest offensive threat Brittney Creel under control for most of the night.

The Rams now improve their record to 11-6 and 1-0 in conference play. Friday night Gavilan will host Foothill College in a battle of two top 25 ranked teams, in what should be a battle for supremacy for the Coast Conference South. First serve is scheduled for 6:30.
