Gilroy, CA- Five weeks ago the women’s college volleyball season started, and for five weeks fans of Gavilan College Volleyball have been waiting to see this year’s version of the team. Last Friday night in their home debut, the Rams didn’t disappoint their fans, defeating Monterey Peninsula College in three straight sets 25-10, 25-9, and 25-23.

The Rams opened the match with a few jitters, and found the score 6-5 early in the first set before going on a 19-5 run to end the first set.  The offense found ways to score early and often with all five starting hitters combining to average a .296 hitting percentage. With Jessica Stofer (9 kill), Tazi Apple (7 kills) and Savanna Hartman (7 kills) leading the way. Sabina Gerard recorded 16 assists playing halfway into the second set before turning the offense over to Lissette Pedraza who finished with 14 assists of her own. Leading the way defensively was Karina Daniels (16 digs) and Raelynn Heredia (11 digs). Heredia also served a career high 5 aces leading the way from behind the line.
The Rams now hold a 10-5 record and once again hit the road for their only match of the week. Gavilan will take on Cabrillo College in Aptos at 6:30 on Wednesday night. The Rams will not take the home floor again until October 11 against Foothill College.
