Gilroy, CA- Gavilan College won back to back Coast Conference South Championship last night after defeating Cañada College in straight  sets  25-17, 25-17 and 25-8. They improve their record to 21-7 and 11-1 in conference play. It was a night to honor the most successful sophomore class in the history of the program, and possibly the last chance for the Rams to play on their home court, in front of friends and family. The program achieved multiple milestones last night with its 125th win since being reinstated back in 2005 and the 21 wins this season is the most by any team in the history of the program. The Rams are the first female athletic program for Gavilan College to win back to back Coast Conference Championships and the first to do it since the football team achieved this feat back in 1995 and1996. The volleyball team has now won three Coast Conference Championships in the last 5 years.  The Rams will also be making their 5th straight appearance in  the CCCAA Nor-Cal Regional Playoffs.

Offensively, setter Sabina Gerard dished up 25 assists to six different hitters on the night. For the season, Gerard has 908 assists surpassing her last season total of 903 and is now has 752 more assists than any other setting in the history of the program. Leading the way was Jessica Stofer (9 kills) with Andreinna Castaneda, Savanna Hartman and Tazi Apple all contributing with 6 kills of their own. Apple now finishes the regular season with 350 kills and has 551 in her career putting her 92 kills ahead of second place on the all-time list. The offense finishes the regular season ranked 6th in the state in kills with a total 1113.

For Castaneda biggest contribution came on the defensive side of the net with a career high of 7 blocks, the most any Ram has had this season. She now has 70 blocks this season, two away from tying the record for most blocks by any Ram in an individual season.  Also on the defensive side was Karina Daniels who led the team with 14 digs followed by Gerard (13 digs), Raelynn Heredia (8 digs), Daisy Valladares (7 digs) and Brittani Siaz (5 digs). Daniels now has 522 digs this season, 19 more than any other Ram has had in a single season. Her 781 career digs which leaves her two digs from being second place all-time in the career dig category. The Rams defense finishes the regular season ranked third in the state in the digs.

It was another strong serving performance for the Rams with 9 aces on the night. Gerard at a game high of 4, with Apple, Daniels, Heredia, Siaz and Stofer each getting one apiece. For Daniels she now has a career total of 93 aces which is 28 more aces than any other Ram ever. The team total this season of 209 is the most by any Rams team since the 2007 season, which is when the 25 point scoring format began.

Gavilan College will have to wait until Sunday to find out who their first round playoff opponents will be, and where the match will take place. What they do know is the match will take place on Tuesday night, November 26, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. The second round of the playoffs takes place Saturday night, November 30, 2013.
