Gilroy, Calif. -Head coach Kevin Kramer has announced the schedule for the 2012 Gavilan College Women’s Volleyball season. Playing one of the toughest non-conference schedules, the Rams hope to make another run at the post season and try and capture the programs second conference title in four years.
Gavilan will finish their fall training camp by participating at the highly competitive Cuesta Preseason Tournament down in San Luis Obispo on August 25. The Rams will face teams from both Northern and Southern California.
Then the Rams will play host to the first of four Gavilan College Classics on Friday, Aug. 31. The Rams will take on non-conference rival Feather River College, which will mark the 5th year the Rams and the Golden Eagles will start off the season. Ending the season ranked 15th in the state, the Golden Eagles will be joined by the Beavers of American River College, who finished last year ranked 8th. The Rams and Beavers renew their acquaintances with each other having taken a three year hiatus off playing one another.
The month of September promises to be a busy one for the Rams. On Wednesday, September 5 the second Gavilan College Classic takes place. Perennial Bay Valley Conference power Napa Valley College (25th in the state in ‘11) as well as Central Valley Conference runner-up, Porterville College, will be the opponents.
Two days later the Rams will find themselves in Stockton for the Delta College Classic. This two day tournament takes place from Sept. 7-8 and is the toughest tournament hosted in Northern California. Gavilan College has won the consolation championship three years in a row.
Friday the 14th of September the third Gavilan College Classic will take place with Taft College and Allan Hancock College making the trip up north. This is a rematch from last year’s Taft College Classic where the Rams went 2-0 on the day.
Gavilan College then travels to Sacramento City College Wednesday, Sept.19. The Panthers finished last year with a ranking of 16th in the state having won its last three matches against the Rams.
The fourth and final Gavilan College Classic takes place Saturday Sept.22. Last year’s State Runner-up Santa Rosa College makes their first trip to Bud Ottmar Gym. Also joining them are the Eagles of the College of the Siskiyous. The Eagles are looking to make their third straight appearance in the regional playoffs.
The final week of September doesn’t get easier for the Rams as they will play all three of their Coast Conference crossover matches against perennial playoff teams, De Anza College Sept. 25, City College of San Francisco Sept. 26, and Cabrillo College on Sept. 28.
The Rams start conference play on the road against 3 time defending conference champion Foothill College, Wednesday Oct. 10. This marks the first meeting between the schools as division rivals. Ohlone College then comes down to visit the Rams on Oct.10. The next week has the Rams traveling to West Valley College on Oct. 17 and hosting Skyline College on Oct. 19. The final week of October has the Rams going to Chabot College on Oct. 24 and hosting Foothill College on Oct.26 marking the second round of conference play.
November brings a road trip to Ohlone College on Nov.2. Sophomore night for the Rams is scheduled for Nov.7 against West Valley College. Then it’s a two match road trip to visit Skyline College Nov.9 and Chabot College Nov.14.
