Gavilan College – On a night where the plan for the Gavilan College volleyball team was to celebrate the sophomores as they play in their last home of the season, became so much more. It became a night of celebration and accomplishments. Five players were honored in a ceremony before the match, during the match the program got a new all time kill leader, oh and shortly after the match the team learned they are once again Coast Conference South champions.

The game’s outcome was never in doubt as they Rams won in straight sets against San Francisco City College 25-16, 25-19, 25-19. Flo Tukuaoga lead the way with 12 kills, while Teresa Ochoa had 11 of her own. Keona Stopper distributed 19 assists with Melissa Zanotto 10 and Sofia Quintanilla 7 contributing as well. Three finished with double digit digs as Noel Chavarria finished with a team high 16.

During the match, Ochoa moved into 1st place in the all-time kills in a career list surpassing Tazi Apple who set the mark in 2013. Ochoa currently has 595 kills with at least two matches left to play.  She is also on pace to have the greatest number of kills in any one season by a Ram.

The biggest headline of the night came in a few minutes after the match ended. As the team was wrapping up preparing to leave the gym, word came in that De Anza had beaten West Valley in straight sets, giving the Rams their 4th straight conference title and the programs 7th in the last 12 years. The sophomore class in the programs fourth class to win championships in both years of their careers. The class of 2013 was the first followed by the class of ’17 and ’18.

The Rams will close out the regular season against Cabrillo College on Friday night in a Coast Conference crossover match. The game will be played in Aptos, starting at 6:30 p.m. Go Rams!
