Rams take down the Saints

Santa Clara, CA – Behind Lizette Moreno’s career high 31 points, the women’s basketball team opened up conference play with a road win over Mission College by a score of 75-65. The Rams win is the first over the women’s basketball powerhouse Saints since the reinstating of the basketball program which occurred back in 2012.

Despite jumping out to a two-point lead after the first quarter, the Rams found themselves down 38-28 at the half. After some halftime adjustments from Associate Head Coach Melissa Llanes, the Rams came out on fire. They out scored the Saints 23-13 in the third quarter to even the score at 51-51. In the fourth, Gavilan did not cool down as they put up 24 points in the quarter while holding the Saints to only 14 points.

Gavilan shot 39.5% from the field while only hitting 2 of their 16 3-point attempts. Along with Moreno’s career night, the Rams had a strong showing from the bench as they contributed 24 points. Sophia Ayala had 12 points, her most points scored to date in her freshman season for the Rams, with Shayna Tran pitching in 8 points as well. Tran accounted for the teams 2 3-point buckets. Sina Syddell controlled the paint pulling in 10 rebounds, with Madison Sharble finishing not far behind with 9 while contributing 7 points as well.

The Rams with this win and a 59-40 win over Porterville College on the 29th of December, they will look to push their winning streak to 3 as they host Hartnell College on Friday night. Tip-off will take place approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the Men’s game. Go Rams!
