Gavilan College – For only the second time in recent Gavilan College women’s basketball history, the team is 2-0 to start conference play after taking care of Hartnell College by a score of 70-35 last Friday night.

The Rams were simple too big and too fast for the undersized Panthers, who only suited up 5 players. With the size advantaged, Coach Llanes had her team attack from inside the paint, which they did as they got an early 18-11 lead after the first period. From this point forward the Rams never looked back. Their lead nearly double by halftime with the scoreboard showing 38-21 in favor of Gavilan. As evidence of a successful game plan, Madison Sharble the team’s starting center for the night had 9 points to lead the team at the half.

The second half was more of the same. Every Ram got in on the scoring, while they ratcheted it up on defensive end holding Hartnell to just 5 points in the third and 9 in the fourth. Gavilan finished the night with three players leading the team in scoring with 11 points, the fore mentioned Sharbel, Makenzie Barnes and Sophia Ayala. Both Barnes and Ayala scoring came off the bench, which has been giving major contributions since the start of conference play. For Barnes and Sharbel it was a double double night as they also cleaned up on the board, finishing with 15 a career high for Barnes and 11 rebounds for Sharbel. The team’s other center Sina Syddell also had a nice game scoring 8 points while bringing in 8 rebounds.

The Rams now 6-10 overall and 2-0 in conference play, tied with San Jose City College. They will host Cabrillo College at home on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. before finishing the week on the Road taking on De Anza College at 5 p.m. Go Rams.
