Saying Goodbye with a Win

Gavilan College – Playing in their last home game of their Gavilan College basketball careers, the four sophomores Makenzie Barnes, Mireya Hernandez, Lizette Moreno, Evelyn Rios and their freshman teammates wanted to make one last statement. And what a statement they made, as they cruised to a 70-44 win over San Jose City College.

The Rams quickly jumped on the Jaguars after a pre-game ceremony honoring the fore mentioned sophomores, with a 16-5 run to start the first quarter. The 11-point lead carried on through halftime, going to 13 after the third quarter. In finishing time, the Rams put on a show outscoring San Jose City by 14 points cruising to a 26-point win.

Four Rams finished in double figures lead by Moreno’s 17 and Hernandez’ 16. Both Rios and Sina Syddell finished with 11 points of their own. Rios recorded her second double double of the season as she brought in 13 rebounds to lead the team. Gavilan hit on only 3 of their 12 3-point attempts but shot 48% from the field.

Gavilan are now 11-14 overall and 7-4 in conference play sitting in 3rd place. They will look to finish out their regular season play on Friday night as they travel to Monterey Peninsula College, tip off is scheduled for 5 p.m.   Go Rams
