Deserved Recognition

Gavilan, CA – As another successful season for the Gavilan College men’s basketball team has come to an end, members of the program are getting some much deserved praise. The team finished with a record of 27-3, they went a perfect 12-0 in conference play en route to a second straight conference championship and advancing to the CCCAA NorCal Regional finals, also for the second straight year. So it should come as no surprise that the Rams are receiving awards for their effort.

The coaches of the California Community College Men’s Basketball Coaches Association have name two Rams, Xander Bowers and Daylon Potts as members of the 1st Team All-State. Bower is a 6’7 forward from Christopher High, averaged 11.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3 blocks a game. Potts is a 6’6 forward from Edison High in Fresno, averaged 9.7 points, 11 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 1.7 steals a game.

Before the post season started, the coaches of the Coast Conference also praised recognition down on the Rams. First and foremost was Coach Dallas Jensen who was named Coast Conference South Division Coach of the Year. This is the second straight year he has won the award. Three Rams were named to the 1st team, Bowers, Potts and D.J. Burgess. Bowers a year ago was named to the Honorable Mention team. Burgess a 6’5 sophomore guard from Valley Christian in San Jose averaged 12.2 points 2.8 rebounds.  

The only Ram to be named to the 2nd team All-Conference is Ibn Zaid. The 6’1 sophomore guard from Taft High in Los Angeles was the team’s leading scorer averaging 13.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.6 steals a game. Last year as a freshman, he was a member of the 1st team all-conference.

Patrick Fisher a 6’ freshman guard from Bloomington High in Bloomington Illinois was named as Honorable Mention. Fisher’s numbers were 7.7 points with 3.8 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.7 steals a game.
