Gavilan College – It was a match up of NorCal volleyball powers has the Rams hosted Sierra College and Delta College in a Friday double header out on the sand. Despite the rain and hail that poured down on the Beach at Gav, it was all sunshine for the Rams as they came away with a pair of wins.

Final score: Delta 1 Gavilan 4,  Sierra 2  Gavilan 3

Location: Gilroy, Ca (The Beach at Gav)

Records: Gavilan 3-2   Delta 0-3   Sierra 2-2

The rams jumped out to a kick start against Delta College. In the first wave, it was the 5’s of Lex and Noel Chavarria and the 4’s of Evelyn Clonts and Melissa Zanotto that took the courts. Very quickly Gavilan would go up 2-0 as both duos won in straight sets. Then needed only one more win to clinch the dual, the 3’s of Flo Tukuaoga and Katelyn Viray, 2’s made up of the duo of Mikeila Banda and Keona Stopper and the 1’s of Katia Dizon and Sarah Weiby all looked to get that one win. It was the 2’s team which won their match in straight sets that gave the duo to the Rams, but the 3’s won their match but it took three sets to get it done. The 1’s lost their first set 23-25 then came back to win the second set 21-8 before ultimately falling in the third 15-9.

It was a tougher match against Sierra, the team that knocked the Rams out of the playoffs a year ago in route to sweeping the season match up 2-0.  The Chavarria sisters at 5’s, once again took the court first along with the 4’s of Clonts and Zanotto. The Chavarrias won their match with ease 21-12, 21-10. The 4’s were never able to get on track as they lost in straight sets. Playing in their second straight 3 set match, the 3’s of Tukuaoga and Viray won their match 21-18, 13-21 and 16-14. At this point in the match the odds were in favor of the Rams. There were two matches to go and they needed to win just one as the 1’s and 2’s took their turn.  After one set a piece in both match the tied had turned and Sierra was up in both matches. But as the pace slowed down in the 1’s match, the 2’s got going. Banda and Stopper corrected a few of their mistakes and took the second set 21-17 after dropping the first 21-18.  With the set over the momentum of the match never left the duo as they battle in the third set winning 15-10, giving the dual to Gavilan. With the outcome settle it left the 1’s to play out their match. The pair from Sierra came out victorious 21-14 to win in straight sets.

  • Lex and Noel Chavarria playing in their first matches of the year went 2-0
  • Mikeila Banda and Keonna Stopper went 2-0 including the dual clinching win against Sierra
  • Florence Tukuaoga and Katelyn Viray who also went 2-0, got their first win of the season which also sealed the Delta win.
