Santa Cruz, CA – The Gavilan College Beach Volleyball team opened up conference play against Cabrillo College and West Valley College on the road last Friday afternoon. In two hard fought dual, the Rams came out victorious with each deciding match ending in the 3rd set.

The Rams got out to a quick start against the Seahawks jumping to a 2-0 lead in the first wave of matches. The #5 duo of Lex Chavarria and Noel Chavarria won their match in straight sets 21-1, 21-7, while the #4 team of Evelyn Clonts and Melissa Zanotto defeated their opponent by a score of 21-15, 22-20. The second wave had the top three pairs in action.  Mikeila Banda and Keonna Stopper playing in the #2 slot lost their match 23-21, 21-16. The next pair to finish was the #3 pair of Juice Viray and Flo Tukuaoga who came from behind to win 10-21, 22-20 and 15-8. The win gave the dual to Gavilan. The #1 pair of Katia Dizon and Sarah Weiby lost their highly competitive match 17-21, 21-14 and 15-12.

In the second match of the day, the Rams took on West Valley College, who defeated Foothill College 5-0, while Gavilan and Cabrillo battled it out. This time the two teams split the opening wave. The #5 team Chavarria won their match 21-15, 21-16. Meanwhile the #4’s duo Clonts and Zanotto dropped their match in three sets 12-21, 21-18, 15-12. So, in the final wave it was a dual to two. Gavilan got on the board first when the #2’s Banda and Stopper won their match 21-19, 22-20. West Valley answered back with a three-set win in the 1’s dual as Dizon and Weiby dropped their match 15-21. 21-3, 15-10. So once again it came down to the #3’s of Tukuaoga and Viray. Playing in their fourth straight 3-set match, the Rams found themselves losing the first set 22-20. They retaliated with a 21-16 set two win, to force the game into the third set. With both teams surrounding the final match left to play the two teams battled it out, with the Rams down 8-7, but then Tukuaoga took over the match at the net, while her partner handled the defensive end over and over again digging every West Valley attempt. Then with match point, Viray served up an ace to give the match and dual to the Rams. In the exhibition match it was the team of Zoe Harada and Adrianne Orahood that defeated the West Valley team in come from behind fashion by a score of  15-21, 21-15, 15-6.


  • Lex Chavarria and Noel Chavarria are on a four-match win streak, without dropping a set.
  • Flo Tukuaoga and Juice Viray have also won four straight matches, all in three set wins.


The Rams will be back on home sand next Friday afternoon. They will play a conference match against Foothill College, followed by non-conference match up with Feather River College. The Golden Eagles are one of the two favorites to win the Big 8 along with Sierra College a team the Rams just beat a week ago. Game times are to be announced. Go Rams!
