Gavilan, CA – In his second year at the helm, head coach John Lango has released the 2019 Gavilan College Football schedule. With a full year to recruit, there is a buzz around the program as the coaches and player anticipate big strides to be taken in the upcoming season.  Coach Lango expects to have a roster of around 55 players, of which 21 are sophomores, a majority on the defensive side which should be the strength of the team.

The schedule maker has the Rams playing five home games out of their 10 scheduled games. They will both start and finish the year at home. Also for the first time in recent memory, the Rams will take on another college on campus in a scrimmage as they take on Foothill College on Thursday, August 29 at 4 p.m.  As a reminder all regular season home games will take place at Gilroy High School.

In September, Gavilan will have four games alternating between home and away. The season kickoffs on September 6th with something special as the Rams will play a Friday night home game for the first time in over 20 years.  They will be hosting Los Medanos College, a team that finished last season with a record of 3-6. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. On the Sept. 14th the Rams will be traveling up north to Eureka, as they will face off against the College of the Redwoods. Due to the distance, the team will experience an overnight trip which is a new experience for most of the newcomers. The first real big test comes on the Sept. 21st as Gavilan is set to host De Anza College. The Dons are the defending American Conference Pacific 7 Division Champs, finishing the year with a 10-1 record. To close out the month, the Rams will start Gold Coast division play as they head down south on Sept. 28th to play under the lights as they take on Monterey Peninsula College at 6 p.m.

October has the Rams once again playing an even amount of home and away games, but this time the away games are sandwiched between home games. On Oct 5th Hartnell College comes to town. A year ago the Rams trailed at half 14-7, before special teams tilted the game in favor of the Panthers, despite the Rams ability on offense to confuse Hartnell’s defense.  In the first of two straight road games, on the 12th Gavilan will travel to Los Altos Hills to take on Foothill College in a American Division Crossover game. The Owl’s finished third in the Pacific 7 Division with a 5-4 record. Then the following Saturday, Oct. 19th the Rams heads South for a match up with Reedley College. The Tigers are the defending conference champions of the Gold Coast Division and will be a big test for the Rams. It’s back home for the Rams on the 26th of October as they take on Cabrillo College.  A year ago against the Seahawks, the Rams offensively found their groove as they put up over 300 yards of offense. This year, coaches expect the defense to rise to the occasion to help put the team over the top.

Gavilan will get some much deserved rest to start November as they will have their bye on the 2nd.  After some rest the Rams will look to finish the year strong, starting with a road game against rival San Jose City College on the 9th of November. No only a geographical rival, but the rosters of both team have players from the same highs schools, so for recruiting purposes this is one of the biggest game of the year for both teams. The season finale takes place back at home on Nov. 16th as Merced College comes to town. The Blue Devils finished last season with a 4-6 record, finishing two places above the Rams.

With the exception of season opener against Los Medanos and the road game with Monterey Peninsula, all of Gavilan’s games are will take place at 1 p.m.
