Taking Over The Reins

Gavilan, CA – On August 14, 2019 Tyson Norton was officially named the head coach of the Gavilan College women’s volleyball team. The announcement came from Dean of Kinesiology & Athletics, Ron Hannon.

Norton is a native of Corona CA, who spent the last four year as an assistant coach at the University of Nevada, which is a division I institution.

When asked to describe how he feels about taking over the Rams’ program Coach Norton said, “I am very excited to be the next Head Volleyball Coach and Kinesiology Instructor at Gavilan College. I would like thank the search committee including Dr. Rose, Dean Hannon, and Department Chair Dequin. I look forward to continuing the success in the Coast Conference while graduating our student-athletes to the next level. I am grateful for the opportunity to lead a volleyball program with such a strong history and tradition. The Gilroy, Hollister, Morgan Hill, and South Bay areas have produced great student-athletes which will continue to enrich the Gavilan Volleyball program.”  

“We're excited about having Tyson join the Rams staff at Gavilan College as our head women’s volleyball coach.  His experience both as a former student-athlete and the past eight years of coaching at the division one level provides a unique opportunity for our players to continue learning at a high level.  Tyson brings a special quality that will allow us to continue to build on standard of excellence that has been synonymous with Rams volleyball for the past decade or more,” stated Ron Hannon, Dean of Health and Wellness and Athletic Director at Gavilan College.

When asked about his goals for this upcoming season he said, “Our plan this season is to be the best Gavilan team we can be. We are looking to build on the success of our previous teams with our experience, attitude, and competitiveness by doing things the right way on and off the court. I am eager to get on the court and start training the hard working student-athletes at Gavilan. The ultimate goal is to have each student-athlete excel in the classroom and to for compete for the Coast Conference and CCCAA State Championship.

After high school, Norton played college volleyball at Golden West College before transferring to U.C. Santa Barbara where he finished out his playing career. His coaching resume includes stops at both Golden West College, where he spent one season as an assistant before joining the Gaucho coaching staff in 2008-2009 and in 2012-2015. He also has ties in the club scene where he has coached in both Northern and Southern California, most recently for Silver State Volleyball Club out of Reno. Norton earned a B.A. in communications from U.C.S.B. and holds Master’s degrees in Exercise Science as well as one in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University. Also joining the Ram family is Coach Norton’s wife Sarah, and their three young energetic and amazing daughters.
