Gavilan, CA – The 2019 Coast Conference Beach Volleyball Champions now knows their path to the state championship after the conclusion of the regular season in both team play and pairs play. In team play, the Rams will head to West Valley College on Wednesday, where they will take on the host school, who shared the conference title with Gavilan as well as Fresno City College.  Base on their results in the Coast Conference Pairs Tournament the pair of Katelyn Viray and Flo Tukuaogo will be playing in the NorCal Pairs Championship Friday at Sierra College.

In the team competition, the Rams will be playing in a round robin match up where all three team will play each other head to head and the one team with the best record will advance to the State Championship which will be held at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center in Chula Vista on May 9-11. During the regular season Gavilan has spit with both teams. Earlier in the year Gavilan defeated West Valley 3-2 over on the beach in Santa Cruz, only to drop a match to them three weeks later on West Valley sand 3-2. As for the match up between Rams, the Fresno City Rams won the first match up earlier in the season 3-2, while just two weeks ago the Gavilan Rams won 4-1 with a conference title on the line. Gavilan will start the against Fresno City and 3 p.m. and will finish against West Valley at 5 p.m. The match between Fresno City and West Valley will be the first match of the day starting at 1 p.m.

To qualify for the NorCal tourney, Viray and Tukuaoga had to finish in the top eight of the Coast Conference Pairs Tournament held last Friday at Gavilan College. The pair had a very difficult draw as they had to go through not one but two pairs of teammates to qualify. They started the day with a win over Lex Chavarria and Noel Chavarria, Gavilan’s number 5 pair. Then it was a match up with Katia Dizon and Keona Stopper, Gavilan’s number two duo. After the two wins, the duo had to only win one more match to qualify for the NorCals. After a hard fought loss the Cabrillo’s number two pair, Viray and Tukuaoga defeated the Foothill pair of Sargent and Zamora to qualify. With the team out of gas, after playing in more sets than they have ever played in one day throughout the season, they chose to forfeit their final match ensuring them of an eight place finish.

In the NorCal Pairs Championship, Viray and Tukuaoga will take part in the 16 team tournament, where the top 8 will advance to the State Pairs Tournament which is also taking place at the Elite Athlete Training Center in Chula Vista. In terms of the the way the bracket works, if any pair wins one match before losing two, they will qualify for the Stata Championships.  The top 8 seeds from the Big 8 will take on the top 8 seeds from the Coast Conference. The road for the Rams duo will not be an easy one. They are the number 8 seed from the Coast which means they will be taking on the number 1 seeded pair from the Big 8, the number 1 team from Sierra College of Meghan Merlino and Haley Biles. The winner of that match is an automatic qualifier as previously stated and will continue playing for a seed. The loser of the match will play in an elimination match with the loser of the Cary/Skucius (Cabrillo) and Nagase/Carnes (Feather River) match. The pair representing Gavilan College will begin their journey to the State Championships at 10 a.m. Go Rams!
