Stockton, CA – Every year volleyball teams travel to Stockton to take part in Northern California toughest volleyball tournament, the Delta Classic. 16 teams participate in the two day event. This past year 12 of the 16 teams were a playoff team, 4 were conference champions and one was the State Championship Runner up. For the past eleven years, the Gavilan College Volleyball team has been coming to this tournament to test themselves against the best in the North. Their best finish has been 5th place twice, once in 2013 and in 2016, until last Saturday evening when the Rams took on the Beavers of American River College in the finals of the tournament and came away with a four set victory to win the event.

American River College found their way into the finals after wins over San Francisco City College, Cabrillo College and Feather River College. They are led by Savanah Smith, who spent last season playing for Washington State.

In the first set the Rams came out swinging hitting .250, but just as hot were the Beavers who also found themselves able to terminate the ball at will. With the defense a little sluggish, Gavilan dropped the set 25-18. To start the second the Rams block came alive. At one point blocking the Beavers attack three straight times to give Gavilan a quick 5-0 lead, which they never surrendered wining the set 25-11. The next two sets is where both teams played some of their best volleyball as both team proved to all, that they deserved to be playing in the final of the tournament. However, it was the Rams block that proved to be too much as they would go on to win the final two sets 25-20, 25-20.

Offensively it was Teresa Ochoa leading the way with 17 kills with Charlotte Cannizzaro right behind her with 15. Kieley Hoskins handed out 23 assists with Greysen Gilroy sending out 17 of her own as the pair of setter ran the offense. Mikeila Banda had 18 digs, with Ochoa finishing with 15. Evelyn Clonts had 8 total blocks while Camille Finley finished with 3.

The Rams started the tournament facing Solano College, a team they defeated a week ago. And just like last week Gavilan came away with a 25-20, 25-11, 25-19 win. Cannizzaro had a team high of 12 kills followed by Katia Dizon with 7. Sarah Weiby had 16 assists with Melissa Zanotto behind her 7. Banda had 22 digs to lead the defense.

Their second round opponent was host college Delta, the team that knocked Gavilan out of the playoffs a year ago. The Rams jumped out to an early lead and never let go winning the match 25-12, 25-19, 25-19. Ochoa had 11 kills a team high with Cannizzaro with 9 and Finley with 8 kills, no errors on 12 swings to hit .667. Hoskins 18 assists was three better than Gilroy’s 15. Hoskins had 14 digs to lead the team while both Clonts and Finley had 4 blocks a piece.

In the semifinals the Rams defeated Hartnell College 25-14, 25-15, 25-27, 25-19. Finley had a season high 11 kills to lead the team. Gilroy won the assist battle with 23 while Hoskins had 15. Clonts had 8 blocks and not far behind was Finley with 7. Banda had 15 digs in the back row.

Banda was named tournament MVP, while Cannizzaro and Ochoa were named All-Tournament. The Rams are now 10-0 to start the season for the first time in the programs history. They will take the week off, and host San Francisco City College on the 19th. GoRams!
